About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking an Academic Mentor to assist with developing and implementing relational programs for children, youth, and their families. The goal is to prepare vibrant, academically strong, and socially skilled students who are ready to flourish in life. This role involves tutoring youth in grades Kindergarten through High School in various subjects, monitoring daily homework and reading assignments, and developing programs and curriculum.

Requirements

A High School diploma or GED completion is required.
Ability to read and write clearly in English.
Working with children in an educational environment.
Knowledgeable of basic math, reading, and writing skills.
Ability to quickly learn and apply new information/skills.
Experience with tutoring multiple age groups.
Ability to demonstrate leadership abilities.
Understanding and appreciation of children.
Possess or obtain within 90 days of hire, a current Red Cross First Aid and CPR certificate card.
Must complete and adhere to Protecting the Mission requirements and guidelines, including the ability to pass a TSA background check.
WA State Food Worker’s Card must be attained within one month of employment.
Willingness to serve a diverse population.

Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook (email and calendar).
Data Entry – able to learn skills required to enter clients.
Knowledgeable of basic internet skills.
Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license and be 21 years old.
Must pass The Salvation Army‘s in-house driving test and Motor vehicles Records check.
Must be willing to continually lift 30 pounds and occasionally 50 pounds.
Must pass a criminal background check.
Ability to drive own and/or assigned TSA vehicles. (Based on availability)

Responsibilities

Walk 1 mile to and from our local school for pickups daily.
Drive a bus van to pick up students and maintain a daily transportation log.
Build and maintain relationships with children/youth/families.
Establish and maintain good communication relationships with Seattle White Center staff.
Tutor youth in a variety of subjects including math, science, history, and reading.
Assist with snacks, washing dishes, emptying trash, and other cleanup duties.
Assist in the management of the learning environment, keeping noise levels to a minimum and students engaged.
Plan and implement curriculum and activities as needed.
Plan and implement family events.
Maintain appropriate records and documentation concerning volunteers.
Monitor homework completion and correctness, consulting with the Education Director regarding students not meeting expectations.
Help with clean up.
Monitor children in hallways, classrooms, computer lab, and other spaces.
Help/lead or assist with youth programs (e.g., Troops, music).
Assist with Family Nights.
Perform any other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
