About The Position

Eastern Connecticut State University is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the Academic Laboratory Specialist, Administrator III, position. Eastern is Connecticut’s Public Liberal Arts University and is located in Willimantic, Connecticut which is 1.5 hours from Boston and 2.5 hours from New York City. Eastern is one of four universities in the Connecticut State College and University System (CSCU). The position also offers substantial health and retirement benefits. PO ITION SUMMARY: Responsible for overseeing academic science laboratories. Maintains appropriate inventory of supplies and maintenance schedule for laboratory equipment. Prepares laboratories for instructional use and manages hazardous waste generated by department research and teaching activities.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge and ability to work with laboratory chemicals and equipment.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and fire regulations pertinent to laboratory settings.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply federal and state laws and regulations as well as university and BOR/CSCU policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply best practices of designated department.
  • Experience working with budgets.
  • Ability to use applicable technologies, equipment, and software.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as presentation skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in academic discipline in area where assigned or related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience in laboratory technical, education, or research work in the assigned discipline or field.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Credentials and/or experience comparable to the above may also be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the preparation, setup, and clean-up of materials and equipment for class laboratory sessions in coordination with science faculty.
  • Responsible for the purchase of laboratory supplies and equipment, processing requisitions and approving invoices for payment within the allotted supply budget for the department.
  • Prepares service contracts for maintenance of laboratory and other department equipment.
  • Acts as liaison with various vendors.
  • Provides input on budget preparation for academic department.
  • Coordinates receipt, storage, and distribution of supplies and equipment to appropriate department.
  • Maintains the department's equipment, systems, instruments, and computers, establishing a routine maintenance schedule, and arranging for repair services with vendors.
  • Submits work orders to Facilities Management as appropriate.
  • Makes minor repairs to equipment as needed.
  • Maintains inventory of all chemicals purchased, stored, and disposed of, in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and in coordination with the Director of Environmental Health & Safety.
  • Catalogs laboratory specimens for departmental use.
  • Assists in the preparation and editing of laboratory manuals for lab courses.
  • Provides safety information to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Prepares and monitors laboratory scheduling and activities for student open lab sessions as directed.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.
