About The Position

The role of the Academic Coach includes developing and maintaining a positive and mutually respectful relationship with students. As the main point of contact for an assigned group of students, the Academic Coach will focus on guiding each student toward achieving academic success. The Academic Coach facilitates daily sessions that focus on character building, academic and socio-emotional skills. This position also provides academic coaching to students one one-on-one and in small groups. In this learning process, it is important to encourage the student to become more self-aware by understanding their strengths, values, interests, purpose, and passion. This process should also focus on the student developing the necessary skills to be responsible for their actions and decisions. Summer Youth Academic and Employment (SYAEP) Academic Coach position is a 6-week part time (30 hours per week) non-exempt position. Estimated program dates are June 8, 2026-July 24, 2026. Academic Coaches will be assigned according to student demand, coach availability, and coordination with teachers and the YCD Site Coordinator.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year of college, B.A./B.S. preferred or 1 year of relevant experience
  • Ability to work with youth who perform at different levels in either a classroom or after-school program setting
  • Strong ability to demonstrate 3 teaching modalities: visual (presenting information using graphs, tables, videos, etc.), auditory (by explanation and discussion), and tactile (having the student use their hands, i.e., constructing a model or having them work out a problem or it’s concepts on the board)
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with schools and work in partnership with administrators, teachers, and community partners
  • Passion for mentoring young people, promoting youth development practices, and working towards social change
  • Excellent cross-cultural communication skills and the ability and willingness to work with economically and culturally diverse clientele from various professional and ethnic backgrounds
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, written communication, patience, diplomacy, and high level of customer service skills
  • Ability to think critically, problem-solve and be resourceful
  • Embraces cultural differences and is willing to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Must have proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one and small group academic coaching sessions
  • Support students in setting academic, personal, and career goals, and monitor progress regularly
  • Build strong relationships with students, serving as mentors, positive role models, and ally
  • Prepare and facilitate activities and workshops for groups
  • Assist students with study skills, time management, organization, and test preparation
  • Track student grades, attendance and performance
  • Collaborate with teachers to identify students who need additional suppor
  • Expose students to college pathways and career exploration
  • Organize and lead workshops, field trips, or college tours
  • Check in with students and provide support if need be
  • Communicate with supervisor about any interventions that may need to be taken
  • Work in partnership with classroom teacher to make sure supplies needed are available
  • Communicate any changes from Site Coordinator to Classroom Teacher
  • Encourage a positive classroom climate for students to be themselves
  • All other duties as assigned
