About The Position

Woodcraft Rangers is seeking passionate individuals to join their after-school program as an Academic and Leadership Program Leader for High School students. This role involves creating a fun and positive learning environment, providing academic support across various subjects, and empowering students to develop leadership skills. The position is part-time, on-site in Los Angeles, CA, reporting to the Site Coordinator. Woodcraft Rangers has a long history of serving youth in the Los Angeles area, focusing on holistic development and youth empowerment.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with High School children in school or recreational settings.
  • Experience in leadership development, student government, youth advocacy, civic engagement, or community organizing
  • Experience with tutoring, teaching, mentoring, or youth leadership experience (education, nonprofit, or youth programs) preferred.
  • Strong academic background with proficiency in High School Math and Science (Algebra, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry, Physics), and ability to support additional subjects like English, History, and study skills.
  • Passionate about student development — helping students build academic confidence, independent learning habits, and leadership skills alike.
  • Skilled at explaining complex concepts clearly and facilitating leadership workshops, discussions, and team-building activities in an engaging, age-appropriate manner.
  • Comfortable working one-on-one and with small groups, adapting instruction and facilitation to different learning styles and skill levels.
  • Ability to guide students in goal setting, decision-making, and effective communication, as well as planning and implementing school or community service projects.
  • Ability to follow structured academic support plans and provided curricula while delivering individualized guidance.
  • Patient, encouraging, and committed to fostering a positive, inclusive environment built on integrity, responsibility, and teamwork.
  • Experience supporting students with intellectual/development disabilities and understanding of inclusive practices and various disabilities.
  • Valid FBI & DOJ Livescan clearance.
  • Current TB Test clearance.
  • First Aid & CPR certification (can be provided by Woodcraft Rangers).
  • CPI Certification (can be provided by Woodcraft Rangers)
  • Must successfully pass an assessment evaluating skills in Math, Reading Comprehension, and Spelling.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate, Bachelor's degree, or current enrollment in a related field (Education, Mathematics, Science, Engineering, or similar), preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all program participants, staff, and families — both physically and emotionally
  • Provide academic support across a variety of High School subjects, including Math, Science, English, History, and study skills
  • Work one-on-one or in small groups with High School students, explaining complex concepts in a clear, engaging, and age-appropriate manner
  • Track daily attendance and participant engagement, ensuring active involvement in program activities.
  • Build positive relationships with participants, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Partner with colleagues and your supervisor to plan culminating events that showcase participants' work and achievements.
  • Request materials ahead of time so the Site Coordinator can keep supplies stocked and on budget.
  • Stay current on safety protocols, trainings, and certifications, and follow all emergency procedures.
  • Attend off-site field trips and staff development trainings as required (~15 hours across weekends/intersessional days in spring).
  • Report to the Site Coordinator and Program Manager on assigned duties.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
