About The Position

We invite applications for the position of Academic Advisor from individuals who are student-centered, innovative, and committed to supporting student success. The Academic Advisor will manage an assigned caseload of undergraduate students in the ETSU Clemmer College of Education and Human Development and provide holistic academic advising that supports students’ academic progress, career development, and personal success. The Advisor will work with both current and prospective students, assisting them with degree planning and graduation plans, career exploration, education licensure requirements, and navigation of university resources and supports. Responsibilities include supporting students to graduation and beyond, working closely with faculty and staff to identify and support at-risk students, and maintaining accurate and thorough advising records. As a member of the Office of Student Success, the Academic Advisor will contribute to the implementation of best practices in academic advising and student support. The Advisor may also participate in occasional on- and off-campus recruitment activities, orientation sessions, and other related duties as assigned. This position requires a strong commitment to advancing student retention, persistence, and success. The Academic Advisor is housed within the Office of Student Success in the Clemmer College of Education and Human Development and reports to the Assistant Dean of Student Success and Access. East Tennessee State University enrolls more than 14,000 students across ten colleges. The Clemmer College serves undergraduate students majoring in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Interdisciplinary Studies, Physical Education, and Special Education.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic academic advisement processes and best practices in higher education.
  • Ability to gain knowledge of course catalog, general education core, specific program requirements, and ETSU’s policies and procedures.
  • Ability to gain knowledge of education licensure requirements in the state of Tennessee.
  • Ability to collaborate and establish strong working relationships with students, administrators, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to work in and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to problem solve, think critically, analyze data, and develop appropriate recommendations.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to actively listen and exhibit effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to multitask, organize, and prioritize work load.
  • Demonstrated ability to be innovative and adaptive.
  • Ability to provide quality customer service.
  • Knowledge of computers and various software packages.
  • Ability to become proficient in the most commonly used ETSU advising tools, including but not limited to Navigate, GoldLink, and Degree Works.
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • One year of experience working with individuals in a higher education, counseling, teaching, or related setting (relevant part-time, student worker/graduate assistance, and/or volunteer experience may be considered).

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, psychology, counseling, or other related fields.
