About The Position

To ensure consideration apply by two weeks after the posting date. The Office of Student Academic Success has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Advisor to join their team. The Academic Advisor I position is responsible for providing academic advising to a diverse population of undergraduate students at UW Bothell. In this position, the advisor counsels students on academic policies, course planning, and application requirements for many majors at UW Bothell. The position is also responsible for assisting students in making identity conscious and values based informed decisions concerning personal, educational, and professional goals. This includes guiding and motivating students to identify and overcome obstacles that may be impeding academic success. The number of students served in the UW Bothell Academic Advising office requires the Academic Advisor I to maintain an advising appointment schedule; this does not include time spent on email advising support and administrative advising duties. The population represented includes first-generation, underrepresented minority, veteran, immigrant, and international students. This diverse student body can benefit from close institutional guidance in navigating complex academic curricula. Combined, these factors create a fast-paced working environment in which careful attention to detail is critical. The Academic Advisor I joins a team of advisors who each carry a specific caseload, and will be integrated into a community of advisors throughout the University of Washington Bothell to stay informed of institutional policies and standards of practice. The advisor must maintain positive working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff to ensure effective communication and address student and institutional trends as they emerge. Communication with the University Registrar and Admissions offices is necessary to update, review, and submit Degree Audit, transcript, and graduation records. This position also requires the advisor to support school-based efforts to retain and engage students.

Bachelor's degree in liberal arts, humanities, social sciences, science major, or related field.
Foundational background in student services, with two to three years’ experience in advising, counseling, mentoring, or academic coaching at the college or university level.
Demonstrated ability to form productive working relationships with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds, with an eye towards equity, inclusion, and social justice.
Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent student services in a climate of multicultural understanding and appreciation.

Responsibilities

Work independently to manage a caseload of students' records to ensure their requirements for admission to an undergraduate major and to graduation are completed in a timely manner.
Advise students on matters of general curriculum, course and degree requirements, transfer credit evaluation, major choice, and graduation.
Recommend appropriate academic course loads and course selections, and assist students with developing an educational plan of academic courses to achieve their intended educational and career goals.
Encourage students to make informed academic decisions with use of advising tools including but not limited to Degree Maps, Degree Audit Records, MyUW resources, and Academic Catalog information.
Analyze, interpret, and explain student data, transcripts, and placement results, as well as university policy and procedures.
Update information for student academic files as needed, and conduct regular academic audits on select students.
Advise students about procedures for petitions, academic warning and probation, and graduation.
Support students' registration concerns and assist with enrollment management.
Maintain confidentiality due to nature of interactions with students, faculty, and other academic personnel.
Make appropriate referrals to departments and other college resources.

Develop strong working relationships with faculty and staff across campus, and actively collaborate with campus-wide departments for advising, student life, student housing, and career services.
Participate as an active member of the university academic advising community and maintain compliance with advising standards, mandatory advisor trainings, engage in available and approved professional development opportunities as recommended.
Remain current with student development theories, University of Washington Bothell major and graduation requirements, and with international, national, and statewide higher education trends and student needs through research and professional advisor networks.
Other duties as assigned.
Serve in a leadership capacity to various committees and groups, including advising policy groups, school committees, and DEI efforts.
