About The Position

The Academic Advisor in the College of Arts & Sciences at Appalachian State University provides comprehensive advising support to undergraduate students across a large and diverse college of approximately 7,000 students in 93 degree programs. Working as part of a collaborative advising team, the Academic Advisor helps students develop and achieve their academic goals while partnering with faculty advisors to strengthen advising practices. This role builds strong relationships with the College Advising and Support Services Hub (CASSH), the Dean’s Office, academic departments, and campus partners to ensure coordinated and effective academic support services. The College of Arts & Sciences at Appalachian State University invites applicants to apply for a full-time (twelve-month) Academic Advisor positions.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • High level of computer proficiency, including Google Suite (Gmail, Sheets, Slides etc.), Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.), and Zoom (online conferencing).
  • Ability to quickly learn technical advising tools including but not limited to: Banner, DegreeWorks, Self-Service, Dashboard, and E-Print.
  • Evidence of excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exhibits strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills and works well in a team environment with the ability to take initiative and to work independently as well as work collaboratively.
  • Has a strong desire to work with a college-age student population and a commitment to student success.
  • Exhibits commitment to execute all responsibilities with quality and excellence.
  • Exhibits a high level of ethics, integrity, and professionalism in all workplace interactions.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in academic advising, student development, counseling, education, or related field.
  • Student services-related work experience in a Higher Education setting.
  • Proficiency with Ellucian Banner Student System and DegreeWorks degree auditing system.
  • Experience with computerized registration.
  • Experience interpreting and administering academic policies with a clear understanding of how these policies affect the student population as a whole as well as the individual student.

Responsibilities

  • Assist undergraduate students in developing appropriate and realistic academic plans.
  • Assist students with course selection and obtaining or granting special permissions for course enrollment when needed.
  • Perform records processing and degree auditing. This may include tasks such as new major processing, changes of program, degree/registration auditing, degree conferral, etc.
  • Monitor academic progress and assisting students in academic difficulty with strategies to achieve academic success.
  • Develop and executing strategies that disseminate information about academic programs and policies to new, readmitting and continuing students.
  • Make appropriate referrals to campus resources as needed.
  • Provide guidance to faculty and staff on student issues and advising policies.
  • Assist with departmental advising needs as assigned by the Director and Assistant Director.
  • Other projects or duties as assigned by the Director and Assistant Director.
