About The Position

The College of Engineering (ENG) at Boston University (BU) is seeking an Academic Advisor for its Undergraduate Programs Office. This role involves providing comprehensive academic advising, disseminating information on degree requirements, supporting student services within ENG, and contributing to overall student success initiatives. Academic advisors assist students with course selection, monitor academic progress, connect them to academic support and enrichment opportunities, and maintain accurate advising records in compliance with University and legal standards. They also offer guidance on academic policies and procedures and direct students to pertinent campus resources.

Requirements

  • Experience with academic advising or a related student support role.
  • Familiarity with university academic policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain student records in accordance with regulations.
  • Proficiency in using student information systems (e.g., MyBU).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population.
  • Bachelor's degree required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an engineering college or similar academic environment.
  • Experience with student orientation, tutoring, or peer mentoring programs.
  • Experience serving on committees or in other service-oriented roles.

Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic academic advising to a caseload of approximately 250 undergraduate students.
  • Assist students in developing educational plans aligned with their aspirations, interests, and values.
  • Encourage academic exploration and engagement in experiential learning opportunities like internships, research, and study abroad.
  • Provide guidance on degree requirements and explain their purpose.
  • Explain BU and ENG-specific academic policies and procedures.
  • Conduct outreach and track student engagement to ensure utilization of academic advising and campus resources.
  • Develop expertise in using MyBU, the University's Student Information System.
  • Participate in student services activities such as orientation, supporting student groups, planning events, facilitating tutoring or peer mentor programs, and assisting with commencement.
  • Potentially serve on University and ENG-specific committees.
  • Participate in advisor hiring and support the advising community.
  • Engage in regular professional development and training opportunities.
  • Perform other duties related to student success as assigned.
