About The Position

Under general supervision, the Academic Advisor Trainee delivers academic advising and student support services for the College of Humanities SSC/EOP. The position applies holistic advising techniques, maintains student records, coordinates programs, provides referrals, participates in outreach activities, and supports student success and graduation. Serves as a member of a team of advisors and is trained to deliver a wide range of services to all new and continuing students in the College of Humanities Student Services Center/EOP, including specific services delineated for EOP students. Working together, the advisor trainee and the student identify activities, programs, initiatives, and referrals that assist the student in achieving success at CSU, Northridge and facilitate graduation. The advisor trainee initiates and maintains caseload records of workload and documents student contacts and interaction, including all referrals to college and university resources. In collaboration with other members of the advising team, carries out assigned tasks relating to the coordination and implementation of programs in the College of Humanities Student Services Center/EOP. Assists in representing the SSC/EOP at campus and community outreach activities as assigned, including but not limited to Explore CSUN, career activities, EOP admission interviews, EOP Transitional Programs, other EOP initiatives, community college “CSUN Days”, COH student welcome events, Commencement and New Student Orientation. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the social sciences, humanities or business administration, or a job-related field.
  • One year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level.
  • Ability to effectively use advising technology and systems, including EAB and SOLAR.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Knowledge of holistic and developmental academic advising practices.
  • Ability to assess individual student needs and provide appropriate referrals.
  • Strong interpersonal and student-support skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate advising records and manage student caseloads.
  • Skill in coordinating student programs, activities, and outreach initiatives.
