About The Position

The Academic Advisor III provides guidance to University students on academic progress, courses, University resources, etc. Identifies courses to be completed in upcoming semesters. Explains University and College policies. Provides guidance, trains, and/or may supervise other advisors. May teach compass course as needed. Works with a team of academic advisors to guide students through the educational process here at the Capstone. Uses appropriate advising practices/theories while working with students to promote academic success. Advises students in course and major selection by communicating general education, College of Engineering, and major requirements. Communicates accurate and timely information and clarify University policies and procedures. Presents and assist with new student and transfer orientation sessions. Creates an environment where students are encouraged to learn, grow, and utilize institutional resources. Seeks opportunities to learn about the advising profession and contribute to the College of Engineering Advising Team and The University of Alabama. Oversees an administrative and/or managerial area as specified in their job duties. Provides interim coverage of College Academic Records Manager functions during absences or vacancies, in coordination with the Academic Records Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of academic advising experience
  • Master's degree and two (2) years of academic advising experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic advising and best practices.
  • Ability to work with various groups of people.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Public speaking skills.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and database management programs.
  • Good planning, coordinating, and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret policies and procedures.
  • Must be a current UA employee to be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with DegreeWorks and Banner.
  • Experience with degree auditing, student academic records, or registration processes.
