About The Position

The Department of Economics at Texas A&M University is hiring an Academic Advisor I. This role is responsible for driving engagement and empowering students to achieve their academic and career goals. The selected candidate will play a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention by building relationships with students and clarifying procedures and academic requirements for the Department of Economics. The right candidate will bring a collaborative spirit, working well with colleagues, faculty, and campus partners to support student success and create a welcoming advising environment.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Knowledge of student development in higher education.
• Ability to lead students in developing education and personal goals.
• Strong willingness to learn and grow, with the ability to accept constructive feedback and apply coaching effectively.
• Experience initiating, building, and maintaining effective relationships.
• Communicating with others in a clear and concise manner.
• Strong skills in customer service.
• Ability to research information to meet situation parameters.
• Active listening to determine speakers’ goals, needs, and/or challenges.
• Familiarity organizing, prioritizing, and working effectively to meet goals and parameters of simultaneous projects.
• Skills in conflict resolution, attention to detail and multi-tasking.
• Ability to use various computer programs to include word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
• Ability to work with confidential information.

Nice To Haves

• Internship, work-study, or volunteer roles in advising offices, residence life, student affairs, or orientation programs.
• Experience in peer mentorship, peer advising, or student leadership roles.
• Basic understanding of academic policies, degree requirements, and FERPA.
• Previous responsibilities in advising, counseling, or mentoring.
• Familiarity with student information systems (SIS), degree audit tools, and advising platforms.
• Prior collaboration with faculty or campus resources.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with students to understand and develop realistic and attainable educational and academic goals.
• Provide input on related majors, minors, future education, and career options that best align with goals.
• Assist students with academic processes such as registration, add/drop, Q drops, withdrawals, and change of curriculum submissions.
• Counsel students regarding core and degree course selection and implication of selected courses and/or exception requests.
• Consistently engage the student population utilizing outreach methods to keep students informed of critical and relevant personal, academic, and professional topics.
• Proactively share available academic, professional, and health and wellness resources such as the Academic Success Center, Career Center, Student Organizations, Counseling & Psychological Services, or Disability Resources.
• Actively monitors students’ progress by reviewing and assessing academic records.
• Assist in the planning and/or delivery of department related advising, student success, retention events, and academic campaigns.
