About The Position

Letters and Science Advisors engage students in decision making on academic matters such as major/minor choices, course selection and degree requirements. They educate students about and encourage participation in co-curricular experiences such as internships, undergraduate research, and leadership development opportunities. Advisors maintain appropriate confidentiality, update student advising records, and contribute to the planning and delivery of academic advising related events and programs, such as new student orientation. Advisors work to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services to support academic success, and refer students to appropriate university resources. The advising team strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment. Specific duties and responsibilities for this position include: · Serve as a main point of contact for students and proactively engage with students to provide information about educational options and academic requirements; assist with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options and refer students to appropriate institutional resources. · Participate in new student orientation for Letters and Science students. · Maintain confidentiality and accurate student records using established campus technology platforms. Process and respond to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies. · Maintain expertise with Letters and Science curriculum as well as college and university policies and procedures. · Participate in the campus-wide advising community, university service, and engage in professional development activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • One or more years of professional work or internship/practicum experience in a higher education setting working directly with students

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree
  • Two or more years of experience advising students in a college/university setting
  • Experience advising students in pre-professional programs such as pre-med, pre-pharmacy, pre-dentistry, etc.
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience building relationships with diverse populations
  • An educational background in the liberal arts and sciences

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • Develops and implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
  • Supervises unit staff and/or plans, organizes, allocates resources, assesses performance, and leads the operational activities of a function within the advising or academic services portfolio, such as program management and/or curriculum management
  • Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • Proactively engages students as needed
  • Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
  • Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
