About The Position

The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at San Diego State University is seeking an Academic Advisor to serve its undergraduate students. The Academic Advisor will support a caseload of students by providing academic advising, student support, and programming that enhances student achievement and timely graduation.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field.
  • Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.
  • Minimum of two years of experience as an academic advisor in higher education.
  • Experience providing outreach services to students, specifically first-generation college students.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing data to determine trends related to retention and graduation rates.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must currently be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • Must complete a background check satisfactorily.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

Responsibilities

  • Advise current, prospective, and former students on course planning, degree progress, and university policies.
  • Counsel students experiencing academic difficulty and connect them with appropriate campus resources.
  • Facilitate group advising sessions, orientation programs, and student success workshops.
  • Collaborate with SDSU’s Residential Education Office and Division of Student Affairs to create and facilitate academic programming in student residence halls.
  • Assist with key events such as New Student and Parent Orientations and Explore SDSU informational sessions.
