About The Position

The University of Arizona's College of Information Science invites applications for the role of Academic Advising Professional I. This position focuses on developing and implementing strategies, systems, processes, learning experiences, and support networks to foster student success and achieve academic and career outcomes. The role is crucial in enhancing the student experience by guiding students in their integration into the university community and supporting their personal and academic growth. The College of Information Science, established in 2023 and expanded in 2025, offers innovative STEM-designated undergraduate and master’s degrees, and a PhD in Information, focusing on the intersection of people, data, and technology. It boasts nationally ranked programs and emphasizes computational thinking, ethical reasoning, and multicultural communication, driving research and partnerships in areas like cybersecurity, AI, and gaming.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • One (1) year of relevant work experience is required.
  • General knowledge of principles, theories, and concepts regarding student advising, student development, and career planning principles.
  • Knowledge of FERPA regulations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
  • Proficiency in student information systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various groups and individuals.
  • Ability to identify student needs and recommend appropriate resources.
  • Ability to build rapport with students.
  • Ability to evaluate academic progress and identify barriers to success.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advising and academic support for freshmen, transfer, and readmitted students across multiple campuses (Main, Online, and South) to promote successful degree completion.
  • Assess each student's stage of development and foster academic growth by connecting them with appropriate resources and support services.
  • Assist students with academic schedules, evaluate transfer and military credit for degree requirements, and help students establish realistic academic goals.
  • Collaborate with the Student Services team on enrollment, career and student engagement, retention, and other initiatives to support successful degree completion.
  • Utilize University systems proficiently to maintain accurate student files, records, and notes to track and review student progression.
  • Align with other University professionals and Student Services staff to stay updated on advising best practices, policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Attend campus-wide advising meetings and participate in institution-wide advising initiatives such as orientation and outreach.
  • Shadow experienced advisors to develop skills.
