About The Position

Able Seaman (AB) duties vary depending on the vessel and watch. The Master determines the watch schedule and duty list. The AB is responsible for standing the proper watch and performing assigned duties, which encompass operational, maintenance, housekeeping, and safety tasks. This role requires a strong work ethic and the ability to learn and perform various maritime operations and maintenance procedures.

Requirements

Ability to train on barge transfers including loads and discharges from start to finish
Ability to learn and demonstrate knowledge of heater operation, including start up and shut down situations and partlow settings
Ability to learn and demonstrate knowledge of hose handling, including hook-up, disconnection and proper slinging
Ability to learn and demonstrate knowledge of re-packing pumps, per barge maintenance report, and barge maintenance
Strong work ethic
High school diploma or GED
Valid Driver’s License
TWIC card

Responsibilities

Making up the tow; Dropping, spotting and switching barges at docks
Assisting the vessel and tow in making locks
Standing lookout, or riding the head of the tow as a lookout
Performing various tasks such as making a coupling, operating winches and ratchets and line handling, including splicing and throwing lines
Chipping and painting vessel and tow
Repairing flame screens, cleaning P/V valves, greasing winches, etc., in accordance with the barge checklist
Dewatering the barges as necessary
Developing a complete knowledge of all heaters and troubleshooting barge problems
Cleaning the boat, quarters, wheelhouse, galley, heads, and companionways
Performing other cleaning chores as directed
Cooking when needed
Reporting any hazardous or unsafe condition to the Master and making "on-the-spot" corrections when capable
Completing all required training and participating in Safety Programs
