About The Position

Norfolk, Virginia is seeking a full-time Public Safety Telecommunicator, Call Taker, to join their 911 center. As essential staff members, Public Safety Call Takers are the first point of contact for individuals reporting emergencies. The role involves receiving extensive paid training to become independent decision-makers while adhering to established policies and procedures. This position is crucial for dispatching police, fire, or EMS services and providing clear directions and advice to callers.

Requirements

• Must be a United States citizen or have been a lawful resident of the United States for the past 10 consecutive years.
• Type a minimum of 30 words per minute.
• Keyboard proficiency is required.
• Successful completion of a typing test.
• Attend the in-house Public Safety Telecommunicator academy and attain certifications: Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD), Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN/NCIC).
• Normal visual acuity and field of vision and speaking.
• Hearing must follow the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Attend the in-house Public Safety Telecommunicator academy to attain certifications including Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD), Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN/NCIC), and Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) certification.
• Train and certify on multi-line E911 and administrative phone lines and associated equipment.
• Field stressful calls while entering information into the computer-aided dispatch system (CAD) for Police/Fire/EMS dispatch.
• Speak English clearly and effectively control conversations with distressed callers.
• Read maps, reference books, technical manuals, medical cards, and related correspondence.
• Apply mature and professional judgment to apply the proper course of action within standard practices and procedures.
• Maintain communication with other departments for public safety purposes.
• Work with various local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
