Emergency Communications Specialists respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, using a computer aided dispatch terminal for entering call data. They must train and certify in at least two of the three positions: Call Taker, Radio Dispatcher, and Teletype Operator. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply. The Orange County Sheriff's Office offers tremendous room for growth in Communications positions, with various pay ranges for ECS I, ECS II, ECS III, ASL, Supervisor, and Manager roles. New hires receive excellent training, including a six-week classroom phase and 480 hours of hands-on training with a Communications Training Officer. Upon successful completion, candidates are placed on a shift, typically nights, to begin their work as an Emergency Communications Specialist I.
