About The Position

Under general supervision, the 911 Dispatcher is responsible for simultaneously operating a multi-channel radio console and a multi-line telephone while maintaining computer aided dispatch systems and other computer applications. A 911 Dispatcher works within an emergency communication center/public safety answering point, dispatching fire, law and medical emergencies to responding agencies.

Requirements

  • Current Wisconsin resident at time of application
  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Wisconsin Driver’s License maintained throughout employment
  • Previous experience in 911 call taking and dispatch for Police/Fire/EMS and radio communication is required.
  • At least one year of high intensity radio and/or multi-line phone system experience is also required.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check, including a drug test.
  • Must be available to work on holidays and weekends; shift will be over weekends and holidays, required.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word/Excel.
  • Within 60 days employees must obtain CJIS compliance.
  • Within 6 months of hire must obtain a TIME certification and APCO PST certification.

Responsibilities

  • Efficiently operate the 911 emergency answering phone system.
  • Create and maintain generated incidents in Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) for all incoming calls answered.
  • Perform all call notifications, maintain highway log, and monitor entrance points and alarm systems.
  • Operate the CAD and radio system to provide prompt dispatching of emergency units.
  • Query system for warrants, VINs, etc.
  • Notify other departments and other agencies simultaneously, maintain close contact and communications.
  • Input, update, request, transmit and query information from a variety of sources to maintain accurate records.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, exercising good judgment in the safeguarding of confidential or sensitive information.
  • Disseminate information on vehicle, driver license, criminal history, weapons, boats, and other articles via local, state, and national computer networks.
  • Monitor TTY’s, forward to proper authorities, maintain accurate outgoing log, and input fatal reports as needed.
  • Monitor all DOT traffic cameras and assist law enforcement agencies by reporting site pictures for information dissemination.
  • Learn Freeway system thoroughly.
  • Maintain Performance Standards: Ninety percent (90%) of all incoming calls will be answered within 10 seconds. Priority 1 incidents will be dispatched within 90 seconds. ("Stack to Dispatch Time").
  • Login to all programs daily.
  • Send weekly Everbridge test message.
  • Monitor duress alarms for the Courthouse, Safety Building, Institutions, all County buildings with alarm systems.
  • Acknowledge and dispatch law enforcement to alarms.
  • Notify deputies of incoming alarms under all circumstances to ensure situational awareness.
  • Disseminate emergency notification messages via Everbridge.
  • Make emergency notifications to appropriate Command Staff, DA Supervisors and Master Control.
  • Receive NAWAS, state and federal defense calls and relays information to the appropriate city, county, and suburban agency.
  • Work in a high tempo and noisy environment while under duress.
  • The dispatcher must be resilient to these never-ending stresses for the duration of their shift to ensure Officer and Public Safety, discipline and effective working relationships with all staff.
  • Perform Dispatch Assisted Bystander CPR when needed.
  • Monitor garage access to SB, participate in Job Shadowing and Training.
  • Maintain situational awareness and business acumen.
  • Other duties as assigned by OEM Director, OEM Deputy Director, and/or 911 Division Director.
