About The Position

This is a part-time, non-exempt position responsible for receiving emergency calls for service, determining the nature and location of emergencies, and dispatching appropriate units. The role involves using a computer-aided dispatch system, public safety radios, and other communication equipment to maintain contact with units, monitor activities, and disseminate information from national, state, and local law enforcement computer networks. The officer will also provide basic life support and scene safety instructions, answer non-emergency calls, and maintain accurate records. Additionally, the position may involve assisting with training, providing backup to other staff, and testifying in court.

Requirements

  • Ability to use GPS and GIS data relating to county landmarks, roads, and businesses.
  • Knowledge of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system functions, call types, and codes.
  • Knowledge of proper call entry for service Law Enforcement and Fire sides of dispatch system.
  • Ability to learn other agencies working in conjunction with 911 system.
  • Knowledge of County Paging system for Fire/EMS services and resources.
  • Ability to think and act quickly, accurately, and calmly in emergency/stressful situations and handle traumatic details/information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.
  • Ability to interpret and implement local policies and procedures, written instructions, general correspondence, and Federal, State, and local regulations.
  • Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties and accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits requiring minimal direction and supervision.
  • Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of computer software including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations required of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Receive emergency calls for service from the public requesting law enforcement, fire, emergency medical, or other services.
  • Determine the nature and location of emergencies and dispatch necessary emergency units.
  • Transmit and receive messages to and from user agencies via public safety radios, 9-1-1 emergency telephone lines, data terminals, and other communications equipment.
  • Maintain contact with all units on duty and track their status and location.
  • Monitor activities of office staff and other emergency service providers, taking appropriate action.
  • Inquire, enter, update, interpret, verify, receive, and disseminate information from National, State, and local law enforcement computer networks.
  • Operate public safety communications systems, radio dispatch consoles, and associated equipment.
  • Maintain contact with callers when required.
  • Provide Basic life support instructions following the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch (NAED).
  • Provide scene safety instructions to callers in high-risk situations.
  • Answer non-emergency calls for assistance.
  • Create and maintain accurate records and transactions in the RMS.
  • Interpret messages, analyze distances and time periods, and communicate this information.
