About The Position

Hoquiam School District is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled 6th Grade Mathematics Teacher to join our middle school community. This position is responsible for delivering standards-based mathematics instruction aligned with Washington State Learning Standards and district curriculum, with an emphasis on student engagement, mathematical reasoning, and productive problem-solving. Requirements

  • Current 4–12 Washington State Teaching Certificate.
  • Required Endorsement in Middle Level Mathematics or Secondary Mathematics.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely related field.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License (or ability to acquire prior to start).
  • Strong foundational knowledge of Washington State Mathematics Standards and middle-grade developmental needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with students, staff, and families.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful prior experience teaching mathematics in a middle school setting.
  • Experience or familiarity with student-centered instructional frameworks, such as Building Thinking Classrooms or Assessment for Learning.
  • Background working within Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS/RTI) and data-driven PLCs.
  • Proficiency with instructional technology and digital data platforms.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills.

Responsibilities

  • Build trusting, supportive relationships with middle school students that promote emotional safety, confidence, and perseverance in mathematics.
  • Establish high expectations for all learners while maintaining a caring, inclusive classroom culture.
  • Collaborate actively with grade-level teams, special education staff, counselors, and administration through Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).
  • Model empathy, respect, and cultural responsiveness in all interactions with students and families.
  • Design and deliver interactive, standards-based math units using evidence-based strategies like Assessment for Learning and Building Thinking Classrooms.
  • Foster productive mathematical discourse, collaboration, and student-centered problem-solving that connects conceptual understanding to authentic situations.
  • Use positive and proactive classroom management techniques to maintain an efficient, highly engaged learning environment.
  • Integrate educational technology appropriately to enhance instruction, exploration, and mathematical reasoning.
  • Differentiate instruction, scaffolds, and extensions to meet the diverse academic needs of all learners, including students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
  • Implement Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS/RTI) to provide targeted interventions and academic extensions.
  • Use formative and summative assessment data to track progress, adjust instruction in real time, and provide timely, actionable feedback to students.
  • Normalize "productive struggle" as a vital pathway to mathematical growth and problem-solving resilience.
  • Maintain clear, frequent communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress, achievement, and opportunities for growth.
  • Participate in school-wide initiatives, committee work, and district events to support a connected middle school environment.
  • Uphold and contribute to a school climate that reflects the values, diversity, and educational goals of the Hoquiam community.
  • Plan, develop, and execute middle school mathematics curriculum consistent with Washington State Learning Standards and district expectations.
  • Develop common formative assessments with PLC team members and systematically analyze student data to guide instructional planning.
  • Teach foundational 6th-grade math concepts, developing students' conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and practical application skills.
  • Incorporate higher-order thinking routines that encourage students to explain, justify, and defend their mathematical reasoning.
  • Monitor student behavior and maintain a safe, orderly classroom environment using positive behavioral supports.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and apply new instructional practices to improve student achievement.
  • Complete required record-keeping, including grading, attendance, and progress reporting, with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal.
