About The Position

This is a long-term substitute classroom teacher position for 5th grade. The role begins on 8/24/26 and will continue until January 2027, after the holiday break. The successful candidate will be responsible for following lesson plans provided by the classroom teacher, engaging students in lessons, and managing classroom behavior and student interactions. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to cover assigned duties and collaborate with the 5th-grade team. Requirements

  • Ability to follow plans left by classroom teacher
  • Ability to engage students in lessons
  • Ability to manage classroom behavior/student interaction
  • Familiarity with Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
  • Familiarity with Maine Learning Results
  • Experience utilizing state and local assessment data (e.g., NWEA, Maine Science Assessment)
  • Experience adapting instruction for 8-11 year olds
  • Experience teaching organizational habits, time management, and independent study skills
  • Experience implementing a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) framework

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Maine-specific content and the Wabanaki Studies (LD 291) curriculum

Responsibilities

  • Deliver Science and Social Studies instruction aligned with the Maine Learning Results, including the integration of Maine-specific content and the Wabanaki Studies (LD 291) curriculum
  • Utilize state and local assessment data (e.g., NWEA, Maine Science Assessment) to track growth and adjust instructional groups
  • Adapt instruction to meet the cognitive shift from concrete to abstract thinking typical of 8–11-year-olds
  • Explicitly teach and model organizational habits, time management, and independent study skills
  • Implement a consistent SEL framework to help students navigate the evolving social dynamics and "self-critical" phase of late childhood
