About The Position

3rd Cooks provide support to 1st and 2nd cooks as well as the Food Services Manager with the day to day kitchen tasks in a high-volume camp kitchen setting serving up to 450 guests daily. Tasks include set up and take down of service, cleanliness of all kitchen areas, and supporting the dish room. YMCA Camp Elphinstone, located near Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, is just a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, Vancouver. Nestled on 144 acres of temperate rainforest along the shores of Howe Sound, the camp offers a variety of programs for youth ages 5-17 during July and August. These include one- and two-week overnight camps, Leadership Development programs, multi-day paddling and hiking trips, and day camps. From September to June, Camp Elphinstone functions as an Outdoor Education, Event, and Retreat Centre, hosting schools, conferences, weddings, and other special interest groups. Annually, the camp serves over 10,000 participants. YMCA Camp Elphinstone can accommodate and dine up to 472 campers or guests. During July and August, the camp employs around 140 staff and volunteers, while the spring and fall Outdoor Education seasons see a team of 20-50 members. In the winter season, a smaller core team of 10 staff members is maintained. Successful staff at Camp Elphinstone are self-motivated individuals dedicated to helping children and youth thrive in an outdoor camp setting, and they are committed to providing 5-star customer service to all client groups.

Requirements

  • Food Safe level 1
  • Ability to stand for a long period of time and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in the food service industry preferably a camp environment or equivalent is an asset
  • Knowledge of dietary restrictions and allergies
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C is an asset
  • WHIMIS Certification is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Assist with general food preparation and cooking of meals
  • Assist with dishwashing
  • Serve and assist in communicating to participants (adults and children) at meal times to ensure all goes smoothly
  • Ensuring a light level of quality, cleanliness, and food safe handling is met in all aspects of work
  • Providing friendly, professional customer service to participants and staff Inside and out of the kitchen
  • Ensure the safety of all participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all participants and staff
  • Ensure FoodSafe standards are followed at all times
  • Making sure weekly and daily cleaning tasks and checklists are completed
  • Other duties as assigned by Food Services Director or 1st cooks as needed
