About The Position

Luce Elementary School is seeking an exceptional and dynamic candidate to serve as the Luce Elementary School 2nd Grade Special Educator for a long-term substitute position from August 2026 to the end of November 2026, with a possible extension through February 2027. The Grade 2 Special Educator will join a vibrant and supportive team that prioritizes collaboration, creativity, flexibility, and commitment to the goals of the District and its students, families, and staff. Luce Elementary School is an inclusive community serving over 500 students in grades K-5. Requirements

  • Valid Massachusetts DESE teacher certification appropriate for the grade level and subject area assigned.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Highly Qualified as per Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
  • Proven ability to relate to a variety of constituencies, including administrators, parents/guardians, teachers, students, other school staff, and visitors.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Well-organized with excellent leadership abilities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Working knowledge of relevant technologies: internet and email systems; word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software; and educational software.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning learning environment where students can access curriculum, make progress towards Massachusetts standards, and develop social and emotional skills.
  • Work collaboratively with all school staff to implement student Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Participate in and/or facilitate federal and state mandated child find procedures and timelines for identifying students requiring special education services, including administering appropriate formal and informal assessment tools.
  • In collaboration with the Team, develop appropriate Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for eligible students, including creating short and long-term goals based on assessment data and targeted curriculum standards.
  • Participate in federal and state mandated procedures and timelines for case management of identified students, including team meetings and liaison to regular education settings.
  • Schedule, meet, and instruct assigned students in designated locations and times.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and student engagement.
  • Guide the learning process towards achieving curriculum standards and establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media.
  • Evaluate and document student work regularly and provide progress reports.
  • Seek assistance from district specialists as needed.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Follow and implement individual student safety plans, IEPs, 504s, health care plans, and behavior support plans.
  • Assist administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, maintaining order in a fair and just manner.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents/guardians regarding student progress and needs.
  • Communicate instructional plans with Educational Support Professionals regularly.
  • Participate in department, school, and parent/guardian meetings.
  • Stay up-to-date with developments in subject area, teaching resources, and methods, and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal and/or District administration as articulated within the collective bargaining agreement.
