About The Position

Waymo’s Predictive Planning team (PrePlan) develops and deploys machine learning solutions to predict future states of the world and plan the Waymo Driver’s behavior. The team turns Waymo’s driving data into robust, generalizable, and performant deep neural networks that help autonomous vehicles navigate complex environments safely and efficiently.

This internship involves researching, implementing, and evaluating generative models for autonomous vehicle planning; developing machine-learning-powered systems to enhance the ML driver and support Waymo’s growth; and translating real-world driving challenges into machine learning problems using techniques such as foundation models and reinforcement learning. Interns work with industry leaders on impactful projects and have opportunities to apply and expand their skills. The role is a hybrid onsite internship.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing an MS or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related technical field.
• Hands-on experience with modern deep learning libraries such as TensorFlow, JAX, or PyTorch.
• Proficient programming skills, such as Python or C/C++.

Nice To Haves

• Publications in top-tier conferences such as ICML, NeurIPS, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ICLR, IROS, CoRL, ACL, or EMNLP.
• Hands-on experience deploying, evaluating, and maintaining ML-based systems in real-world production environments.

Responsibilities

• Research, implement, and evaluate state-of-the-art generative models for autonomous vehicle planning.
• Develop next-generation, ML-powered systems that enhance the capabilities of the ML driver and accelerate the scaling of Waymo’s business.
• Translate open-ended, real-world driving challenges into well-defined machine learning problems, applying techniques including foundation models and reinforcement learning.
