About The Position

The 1st Assistant Superintendent will work closely with the Superintendent to manage daily operations of the golf course. This role involves monitoring staff performance, ensuring a safe and clean work environment, overseeing irrigation and pest control, and contributing to staff development and departmental policy. The Assistant Superintendent will also be responsible for coordinating with outside vendors, maintaining detailed records, and assisting with human resources functions. Continued professional growth and development are encouraged through seminars and workshops. Familiarity with office software and inter-departmental communication is also expected.

Requirements

  • Minimum of Associate Degree or Certificate in Turfgrass Science or related field from an accredited college.
  • Minimum of two years experience at an assistant level and a total of five years experience in golf course maintenance.
  • Total familiarity with calibration procedures for all applicable turf equipment such as sprayers and spreaders.
  • Ability to write reports and attend meetings at intervals.
  • Confident and conversant with all areas of course maintenance.
  • Must be able to competently operate all pieces of turf maintenance equipment as well as train and select employees for their proper use.
  • Possess a Georgia Pesticide Applicators License in Category 24.
  • Ability to lead and motivate staff.
  • Familiarity with office related computer software such as Microsoft Excel and Word.

  • In conduct and department, the assistant should set an example for the staff.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and executes a daily schedule through communication with the Superintendent and personal observations.
  • Monitors staff performance, documents observations, and ensures quality and quantity of work.
  • Ensures a safe and clean work environment by enforcing OSHA, EPA regulations, and federal/state laws.
  • Supervises and participates in the setup and monitoring of irrigation systems, pump stations, and inventories.
  • Scouts the golf course for insect, weed, and disease problems, diagnosing issues and taking corrective action after discussion with the Superintendent.
  • Develops, implements, and trains employees on departmental policy and training manuals.
  • Provides orientation to new employees on departmental policy.
  • Coordinates, schedules, and inspects projects performed by outside vendors.
  • Communicates with the Superintendent regarding any changes or delays.
  • Competent with irrigation management for cool-season turf varieties.
  • Develops and maintains complete record documentation for golf course operations.
  • Provides input on projects, staff development, employee evaluations, discipline, termination issues, and wage increases.
  • Assists with applicant interviews and Human Resource issues.
  • Attends seminars and workshops for continued professional growth and development.
  • Receives and makes suggestions for improvements to procedure, equipment, etc.
  • Serves as departmental liaison between other departments and committees.
  • Completes and submits monthly Highlights Report to Superintendent and Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.
