About The Position

The 1st Assistant Superintendent plays a crucial role in the daily operations of the golf course. This position involves direct communication with the Superintendent to prepare and execute daily schedules, monitor staff performance, and ensure a safe and clean work environment. The Assistant Superintendent will also be responsible for supervising and participating in the setup and monitoring of the irrigation system, scouting for pests and diseases, and developing training programs for employees. This role requires a strong understanding of turfgrass science, irrigation management, and the ability to lead and motivate a team. Additionally, the position involves administrative tasks such as record documentation, assisting with HR issues, and coordinating with outside vendors.

Requirements

  • Minimum of Associate Degree or Certificate in Turfgrass Science or related field from an accredited college, BS Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years experience at an assistant level and a total of five years experience in golf course maintenance.
  • Total familiarity with calibration procedures for all applicable turf equipment such as sprayers and spreaders.
  • Ability to write reports and attend meetings at intervals.
  • Confident and conversant with all areas of course maintenance.
  • Must be able to competently operate all pieces of turf maintenance equipment as well as train and select employees for their proper use.
  • Set an example for the staff in conduct and department.
  • Possess a Georgia Pesticide Applicators License in Category 24.
  • Ability to lead and motivate staff.
  • Familiarity with office-related computer software such as Microsoft Excel and Word.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and execute a daily schedule through communication with the Superintendent and personal observations.
  • Monitor staff performance, document observations, and provide input on quality and quantity of work.
  • Ensure a safe and clean work environment by enforcing OSHA, EPA regulations, and federal/state laws.
  • Supervise and participate in the setup and monitoring of irrigation systems, pump stations, and inventories.
  • Scout the golf course for insect, weed, and disease problems, diagnose issues, and take corrective action after discussion with the Superintendent.
  • Develop, implement, and train employees on departmental policies and training manuals.
  • Provide orientation to new employees on departmental policy.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and inspect projects performed by outside vendors, communicating changes or delays to the Superintendent.
  • Competently manage irrigation for cool-season turf varieties.
  • Develop and maintain complete record documentation for golf course operations in conjunction with the Golf Course Superintendent.
  • Provide input on projects, staff development, employee evaluations, discipline, termination issues, and wage increases.
  • Assist with applicant interviews and Human Resource issues within the department.
  • Attend seminars and workshops for continued professional growth and development.
  • Receive and make suggestions for improvements to procedure and equipment.
  • Serve as departmental liaison between other departments and committees, such as Safety.
  • Complete and submit monthly Highlights Report to the Superintendent and Director.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
