About The Position

DOLTON WEST SCHOOL DISTRICT 148 is seeking a 12-Month Custodian. This position involves performing various custodial and maintenance duties to ensure the upkeep and safety of school facilities. The role requires adherence to safety policies, proper use of equipment and supplies, and responsiveness to administrative requests. The custodian will be responsible for maintaining building systems, grounds, and ensuring a secure environment. This role also involves interaction with students, staff, and the public, and requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Requirements

  • Ability to learn routine and non-routine maintenance methods, procedures and equipment usage.

  • Must undergo a criminal background investigation in accordance with Illinois statutory requirements.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to approximately 25 pounds frequently and up to approximately 75 pounds occasionally.

  • Ability to use a computer for email and word processing tasks.
  • Ability to handle complaints.
  • Ability to express a service-oriented attitude.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with the district's safety policies and risk management procedures when handling maintenance supplies, cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Perform non-school day tasks.
  • Complete any maintenance or custodial related assignments.
  • Use proper cleaning methods, storage, proper care, safeguarding and proper disposal of designated equipment and supplies.
  • Respond to a variety of requests from the administration, which includes but is not limited to: setting up for meetings and class functions, moving furniture, unloading and storing deliveries.
  • Respond promptly to assignments.
  • Report all accidents and /or potential hazards to the building administration(s) and/or buildings and Grounds Director or Custodial Supervisor immediately or as soon as reasonably possible.
  • Perform tasks to maintain the building site including painting, plumbing and other related activities.
  • Refinish or restore floor tile as required by mechanical stripping, sealing, finishing, buffing, scrubbing and recoating.
  • Maintain carpet by machine extraction, shampooing and spotting.
  • Open and/or secure the building, to provide protection against vandalism and theft as requested by supervisor(s).
  • Maintain building perimeter by inspecting walkways, landscaping and playground equipment.
  • Maintain and/or operate snow removal equipment and all indoor and outdoor maintenance equipment.
  • Tend to furnace, boiler, air conditioner and other equipment to provide heat, cool air, ventilation and hot water.
  • Attend in –service training to develop and improve knowledge and skills of building service work.
  • Observe and promote safe work practices and procedures at all times.
  • Use and wear safety and/or protective equipment, as appropriate.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, employees, visitors, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Comply with and support school and district regulations and policies.
  • Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Business Manager and immediate Supervisors in accordance with school district policies and practices.
