About The Position

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in Communication for its Leonardtown campus. Communication faculty serve as student advisors and are expected to provide students with a theoretical and practical foundation in Communication studies, emphasizing the development of essential human communication skills for personal, academic, and professional success. CSM faculty are proficient in learning management systems and various instructional delivery methods, including face-to-face and technology-based approaches. The role involves teaching courses such as Intercultural Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Communication Theory, Public Speaking, and Basic Principles of Speech Communication. Faculty are dedicated to supporting student success through teaching, assessment, developing experiential and service-learning opportunities, and advising student clubs. The Communication program is vital to CSM's academic community, fulfilling the college's Oral Communication, Critical Thinking, and Cultural and Global Awareness outcomes, and providing foundational education for numerous degree programs. Faculty are encouraged to take leadership roles in campus activities like the Communication Club, Communication Day, and the Public Speaking Competition.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Communication
  • One year of instructional experience at the post-secondary level, which includes teaching courses, managing learning experiences, evaluating student achievement, providing input into curriculum development, policy and procedure formulation, and evaluation of program effectiveness, preferably at the community college level.
  • Ability to use word processing, basic Internet applications, and basic database navigation.
  • Ability to use an educational enterprise, learning management system such as Brightspace Desire 2 Learn to support and facilitate instructional delivery.
  • Ability to teach in face-to-face, web, web-hybrid, and hy-flex formats.
  • Cover letter, résumé, and transcripts are required as part of the application process.
  • Criminal History Check and Sex Offender Registry Check.

Responsibilities

  • Teach thirty credits of courses per contract year in the Communication discipline.
  • Teach a range of courses that may include morning, day, evening, weekend or online.
  • Classes may be taught in both 7- and 15-week terms.
  • Opportunities may exist to teach in the summer session outside the 30-credit load.
  • This position’s primary campus assignment will be in Leonardtown, but may be required to participate in teaching or other activities on our other campuses.
  • Engage students in their learning through active and collaborative learning approaches.
  • Meet with students outside of class to assist them with being successful college students.
  • Incorporate culturally relevant pedagogies into the teaching and learning process.
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate ability to read and interpret information.
  • Demonstrate ability to deliver instruction to students from various backgrounds, with varied levels of learning and preparation.
  • Utilize student engagement strategies that support completion and student success goals.
  • Provide feedback to students to improve their performance.
  • Maintain an ongoing program of professional development and participate in professional organizations, workshops, seminars, conferences, and activities.
  • Demonstrate mastery of appropriate computer operation skills.
  • Coordinate, plan, prepare, present, and evaluate classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning and success.
  • Hold office hours.
  • Serve on various committees.
  • Participate in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations.
