About The Position

The Schools Out 1:1 Counselor position is a SUMMER ONLY role within the South Burlington School District. The counselor will supervise an assigned student, ensuring a safe and engaging learning environment. Key responsibilities include guiding social-emotional learning, co-regulating with students, and implementing curriculum focused on independence and group functioning. This role requires adherence to district policies and collaboration with various stakeholders to support student success.

Requirements

  • Certified in First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), and Second Step Basic Specialized Care, and maintained Advanced Specialized Care Certification annually.
  • Trained in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
  • Demonstrated knowledge in instructional strategies, developmental learning, communication strategies, use of age-appropriate materials, and specialized instructional techniques (vocational skills, social skills, speech-language skills.)
  • Knowledge of learning disabilities, cognitive impairments, autism spectrum disorders, and communication impairments.
  • Knowledge of special education teaching methods, theories, and laws.
  • Good understanding of standard classroom operations and teaching methods; good ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form and demonstrated active listening and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board policies.
  • Demonstrated ongoing commitment to workplace diversity, sustainability, and delivering exceptional customer service.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree or sixty (60) or more college-level credits is preferred.
  • Two or more years of successful experience in a school setting and work with special needs students is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of disabilities, laws, teaching principles and methods, and instructional programming is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises assigned student and helps to maintain a safe, engaging learning environment.
  • Engages assigned student in appropriate behavior; works to co-regulate, guides and models social emotional skills.
  • Implements a curriculum that focuses on student’s independence and ability to function within groups.
  • Supervises student(s) to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment exists for all students.
  • Implements appropriate techniques to co-regulate, guide and model social emotional behavior.
  • Supports student social emotional learning by modeling language and skills.
  • Co-regulates with students who may struggle with self-regulation.
  • Follows district policies and procedures to include but not limited to: instructional techniques, communication plans, and behavior management.
  • Reports any significant incidents to the supervisor.
  • Cooperates with classroom teachers, co-workers, parents, and others to ensure that activities are appropriate for assigned student(s).
  • Adjusts activities when accommodations may be needed.
  • Provides recommendations for enhancing student engagement, student program plan.
  • Provides feedback on student progress and needs.
  • Actively participates in department, student planning, and committee meetings or may attend meetings (e.g., PBIS) as requested by the supervisor.
  • Proactively models positive, constructive behavior to others.
  • Participates in training and professional development that is deemed necessary by the School’s Out Program Administrator and in compliance with the District and the Agency of Human Services licensing regulations.
  • Remains current on district programs and best practices in the profession; may be required to attend training.
