4 key takeaways

  • Use Jobs > Preferences > Resumes and application data to save a resume for Easy Apply.
  • Use Featured to show a downloadable resume on your profile; that copy cannot be used for Easy Apply.
  • LinkedIn may also use a resume to help fill profile fields. That profile-import flow is separate from saved application resumes and Featured media.
  • To update a saved resume, revise the source file elsewhere, upload the new version, verify it, and then delete the obsolete copy.

Uploading a resume to LinkedIn sounds like one task, but LinkedIn stores and displays the file differently depending on where you add it. The first step is choosing the workflow that matches what you actually want to do.

If you only want to download or generate a resume from your LinkedIn profile, use that separate guide. To put your LinkedIn URL on a resume, see how to add LinkedIn to a resume.

How to add a resume to LinkedIn: choose the right option

Start by deciding what you want LinkedIn to do with the file:

  • Save it for Easy Apply: Upload it under Resumes and application data. It is not automatically displayed on your profile.
  • Show it on your profile: Add it as a document in Featured. People who can view that profile content may be able to view or download the file.
  • Use it to build your profile: Choose Set up your profile in minutes with a resume. LinkedIn uses the document to suggest profile information for you to review.

These workflows are separate. A Featured resume cannot be selected for Easy Apply, and a saved application resume is not automatically published in Featured.

How to upload a resume to LinkedIn for Easy Apply

  1. Select Jobs in LinkedIn's top navigation.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Under My qualifications, select Resumes and application data.
  4. Make sure Save resumes and application data is turned on if you want LinkedIn to retain the file and your application answers.
  5. Select Upload resume and choose a DOC, DOCX, or PDF. The uploader currently accepts files up to 5 MB, but LinkedIn recommends keeping resumes under 2 MB.
  6. Confirm that the filename makes the version easy to identify before you apply.

You can also open LinkedIn's Resumes and application data settings directly.

The current uploader shows a 5 MB maximum; LinkedIn recommends keeping application resumes under 2 MB.

LinkedIn retains the four most recently uploaded application resumes. A saved resume can be reused for LinkedIn Easy Apply jobs, but not when a listing sends you to an employer or third-party application site.

How to upload a resume during Easy Apply

When a listing uses Easy Apply, open the job, select Easy Apply, complete the required fields, and choose a recent resume or upload a new one in the Resume step. Review the filename before submitting. If the listing uses Apply or Apply on company website, LinkedIn sends you to an external application and your saved LinkedIn resumes are not available there.

You can select or upload an application resume from LinkedIn on desktop or mobile. Do not submit until you have confirmed that the correct version is attached: LinkedIn says a submitted Easy Apply application cannot be reopened to add a missing resume, and you cannot reapply to the same posting.

How to update a saved resume on LinkedIn

LinkedIn does not provide an in-place resume editor. Update the source file outside LinkedIn, export the revised version, upload it under Resumes and application data, and verify that the new filename appears before deleting the obsolete copy.

  1. Open the resume in your resume builder or document editor.
  2. Make the changes and export a new DOC, DOCX, or PDF file.
  3. Give the file a specific name, such as FirstName-LastName-Product-Manager.pdf.
  4. Return to Jobs > Preferences > Resumes and application data.
  5. Select Upload resume and choose the revised file.
  6. Verify that the new version appears, then delete the obsolete saved copy.

Deleting a saved resume does not remove it from an application you already submitted. The hirer still receives the version that was attached when you applied.

How to delete or download a saved resume

  1. Go to Jobs > Preferences > Resumes and application data.
  2. Find the resume you want to manage.
  3. Open the More or ellipsis menu beside the file.
  4. Select Download to save a copy or Delete to remove it from saved resumes.

LinkedIn only makes a resume available for download if it was uploaded through LinkedIn, not through an employer's external application site. Deleting a saved copy also does not retract previous applications.

How to add a resume to your LinkedIn profile

Privacy note: A resume added to Featured is profile media. LinkedIn says profile or post attachments may be visible to people who view them and may also be visible off LinkedIn. Remove your street address, personal phone number, and any information you do not want profile visitors to access before you publish the file.

  1. Open your LinkedIn profile on desktop.
  2. Select Add section.
  3. Expand Recommended and select Add featured.
  4. On the Featured page, open the + menu.
  5. Select Add a document and choose the resume file.
  6. Add a clear title and description, review the preview, and save it.

From your profile, choose Add section, expand Recommended, and select Add featured.

Open the plus menu on the Featured page and choose Add a document.

A resume added to Featured cannot be selected for an Easy Apply application. Upload a separate application copy under Resumes and application data.

Use desktop when adding a resume document to Featured. LinkedIn's profile-media guidance says documents cannot be uploaded from mobile devices, even though other Featured content can be managed through the mobile app.

How to remove a resume from your LinkedIn profile

Go to your profile, open the Featured section, and find the resume. If it was uploaded directly as a document, choose Delete beneath the item. If LinkedIn shows Remove from featured, that only removes the work sample from Featured; it does not permanently delete the original post, article, or other source content.

Removing or deleting a Featured item does not remove a separate resume saved under Jobs > Preferences > Resumes and application data.

What does “Set up your profile in minutes with a resume” do?

LinkedIn may show this option after you select Add section. It uses information from a resume to help populate profile sections. Treat it as a profile-building tool—not as an Easy Apply upload and not as a public Featured document. Review every imported field before publishing profile changes.

Who can see your resume on LinkedIn?

An Easy Apply resume is shared with the hirer for that application. It is not automatically displayed on your profile.

If Share resume data with hirers is enabled, LinkedIn can also surface skills and experience from resumes you choose to share in its hiring tools. LinkedIn says recruiters do not receive the full saved resume unless you provide it directly, including through an application.

LinkedIn also says it tries to hide resume-sharing signals from recruiters at your current employer and related companies, but it cannot guarantee complete privacy. Check the toggle under Jobs > Preferences > Resumes and application data before relying on saved-resume data for recruiter matching.

Saved resume data may be used for job recommendations, matching, profile suggestions, and—depending on your settings—improvements to LinkedIn's generative AI models. Review LinkedIn's data-use controls if you do not want information you share used for model improvement.

A resume uploaded to Featured follows the visibility of that profile content. LinkedIn says profile or post media may also be visible off LinkedIn. Featured content is not the right place for a version containing private contact details or information intended only for a specific employer.

LinkedIn resume file types and size limits

LinkedIn applies different limits to application resumes and Featured profile media:

  • Saved resume and Easy Apply: DOC, DOCX, and PDF. Aim for under 2 MB; the current uploader accepts up to 5 MB.
  • Featured profile media: LinkedIn supports PDF, PPT/PPTX, DOC/DOCX, JPG/JPEG, PNG, and GIF, with a 100 MB maximum, 300-page limit, and 1-million-word limit.

Do not apply the four-resume storage limit or the 5 MB application limit to Featured. Likewise, do not apply Featured's 100 MB limit to Easy Apply.

PDF is usually the safest resume format when preserving layout matters. Before uploading, open the exported file and confirm that text, links, spacing, and page breaks still look correct.

What to do when LinkedIn will not upload your resume

  1. Confirm that an application resume is a DOC, DOCX, or PDF and aim for under 2 MB, LinkedIn's recommended size. The uploader's hard limit is 5 MB.
  2. Rename the file with simple letters, numbers, and hyphens, then try again.
  3. Open the file locally to confirm it is not damaged.
  4. Export a fresh PDF or Word copy from the source document.
  5. Try another supported browser; this is LinkedIn's documented troubleshooting step.
  6. If an Easy Apply application was already submitted without the resume, LinkedIn says you cannot reopen the application or reapply to the same posting. LinkedIn's own guidance is to contact the job poster directly with an InMail message if they provided contact information in the posting.

The filename, corruption, and re-export checks are practical troubleshooting steps rather than LinkedIn policy; the browser, size, and contact-the-poster steps come from LinkedIn Help. If the error persists, check LinkedIn Help for an outage or a newly changed file requirement.

Prepare the right resume before uploading

LinkedIn is a delivery channel, not the best place to maintain your source resume. Keep an editable master version outside LinkedIn, tailor a copy to the target job, and export a clearly named file before uploading.

If your LinkedIn profile is already up to date, Teal's LinkedIn Resume Builder can import your profile information into an editable resume. Review the imported content carefully: LinkedIn descriptions are often broader than the focused, results-driven bullets a tailored resume needs.

Turn your LinkedIn profile into a job-ready resume

Import your profile, edit the details, tailor it to the role, and export a LinkedIn-ready PDF.

From there, Teal's free Resume Builder helps you match the resume to a job description, keep role-specific versions organized, and export a polished PDF to upload to LinkedIn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is my resume stored on LinkedIn?

Application resumes are stored under Jobs > Preferences > Resumes and application data. A resume added to Featured is stored as profile media instead and follows that content's visibility.

How many resumes can I save on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn says it retains the four most recently uploaded application resumes. That limit does not apply to Featured profile media.

Can I edit a resume after uploading it?

LinkedIn does not document an in-place resume editor. Edit the source file elsewhere, upload the revised version, confirm it appears, then delete the obsolete saved copy.

Can I use a Featured resume for Easy Apply?

No. Featured profile media and saved application resumes are separate. Upload an application copy under Resumes and application data or during Easy Apply.

Can recruiters see my full saved resume?

LinkedIn says recruiters do not see the full saved resume unless you provide it directly, including through an application. Shared resume data can still surface skills and experience in LinkedIn hiring tools.

Is my LinkedIn resume public?

An application resume is not automatically displayed on your profile. A document placed in Featured is profile media and may be visible on and off LinkedIn, depending on your visibility settings.

Can I add or update a resume from the LinkedIn mobile app?

You can upload or choose a resume during Easy Apply on mobile. LinkedIn says document uploads to Featured are not supported on mobile, so use desktop to add a resume document to your profile.

What file type and size should I use?

Use DOC, DOCX, or PDF. Aim for under 2 MB; the uploader currently accepts up to 5 MB. PDF is usually the safest choice when preserving layout matters.

Can I add a resume after submitting an Easy Apply application?

No. LinkedIn says you cannot reopen a submitted Easy Apply application to add a missing resume or reapply to the same posting.
