About The Position

The Sports Nutritionist will support Charlotte FC on a full-time basis. Professional travel will be required based on the soccer schedule. This role involves assessing and monitoring the individual nutrition needs and status of elite athletes, counseling athletes on optimal nutrition for training and competition, and conducting sports nutrition-based testing. The nutritionist will also develop and manage policies related to nutrition, participate in interdisciplinary teams, and implement nutrition education initiatives. Responsibilities include organizing fuel and hydration planning, developing standards of practice, upholding food safety, managing inventory, collaborating with food service professionals, attending practices and games, budget planning, and communicating with various staff members. Additionally, the role involves assisting in the training and mentoring of dietetic interns and student workers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and >5 years' experience OR master's degree with >3 years' experience in Dietetics, Food, Nutrition or related field.
  • Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist with active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN) in the state of applicable state within 3 months of hire; required temporary license within 30 days to practice per state law.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in collegiate or professional athletics.
  • Ability to work a non-standard work week which may include early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, non-traditional work hours, and overnight travel as needed.
  • Engage in continuing professional education, especially relevant to sports nutrition, and be willing to participate in research if the opportunity arises and publish findings where possible.
  • Maintain knowledge and ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and policies for dietary supplements such as WADA/USADA, Drug Free Sport and relevant governing bodies.

  • Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) preferred OR within 1 year of hire. CSSD to be maintained thereafter.
  • ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification preferred OR within 1 year of hire. To be maintained thereafter.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and monitor the individual nutrition needs and status of elite athletes and adjust interventions and recommendations as indicated using current evidence-based research and methodology, relating this information to medical status, anthropometric data, body composition, clinical assessment, and dietary evaluation including energy balance, of the individual or group in the context of athletic performance and health.
  • Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for all components of training and competition, including but not limited to training phases and performance goals, weight and body composition goals, hydration, and supplementation.
  • Conduct sports nutrition-based testing, including hydration (pre/post training weights, USG, sweat testing & analysis) and body composition testing (DXA, Ultrasound, ISAK/Skinfold, or similar), interpreting the data and counseling athletes on achieving and maintaining values consistent with maximizing health and performance.
  • Write medical nutrition therapy orders as appropriate and according to contract location and governing bodies by-laws.
  • Complete and maintain records of all nutrition interventions and track measurable outcomes in areas of responsibility.
  • Develop, manage and update policies as appropriate, including but not limited to: hydration, supplementation, body composition, eating disorders, injury prevention/recovery.
  • Participate as a committee/team member on appropriate interdisciplinary teams to better the performance of athletes.
  • Develop and implement innovative and evidence-based nutrition education initiatives and resources to increase the nutrition knowledge and behaviors of all athletes using a variety of platforms: team talks, grocery store tours, cooking demonstrations, dining hall tours, social media, printed material, and team manuals among others.
  • Organize and supervise fuel and hydration planning for home and travel sites.
  • Develop standards of practice, policies and procedures for applied performance nutrition.
  • Uphold food safety and sanitation practices in all performance nutrition spaces.
  • Travel will be required to assist with applied performance nutrition for preseason, in-season, and postseason.
  • Manage inventory, procurement, receiving, and distribution of goods for assigned sports utilizing current system in place.
  • Collaborate with food service professionals to actively ensure the food provision while training and playing is optimal for the sport performance.
  • Attend practices and games for assigned teams; frequency varies by sport.
  • Budget planning and implementation, pricing negotiation, forecasting, and obtaining preferred vendor pricing.
  • Communicate consistently with coaching staff, strength and conditioning staff, sports medicine staff, team physicians, and department psychologists regarding sports nutrition and performance related issues.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of advanced practice dietetic interns.
  • Oversee the scheduling, training, and mentoring Student Workers.
  • Precept, mentor, and orient team members, students, and dietetic interns.
  • Assess and evaluate dietary supplements for banned substances in the collegiate and professional setting.
