About The Position
The Longshoreman II performs advanced labor tasks in vessel holds and terminal operations, supporting safe, accurate, and efficient terminal and stevedoring work. The role monitors, counts, verifies, and documents cargo movements across vessel, warehouse, and trucking operations to ensure cargo is properly handled, accounted for, and documented. Employees use specialized training and substantial experience to perform complex cargo handling, equipment operation, and securing procedures in high-risk environments. The position works with minimal supervision, troubleshoots common issues, makes minor adjustments, contributes to process improvements, and mentors junior staff.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience in vessel hold operations and advanced cargo handling.
- Completion of specialized training in PIT operation, cargo securing, and equipment use.
- Proficiency in operating forklifts, yard mules, chain saws, and chop saws.
- Strong understanding of cargo stowage principles and safety standards.
- Physical ability to perform demanding tasks in varied environmental conditions.
- Reliable and safety-conscious, with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Must have an active TWIC card.
Responsibilities
- Hook cargo in vessel holds for unloading and unhook cargo during loading onto vessels.
- Understand and follow cargo stowage, dunnage, and securing requirements.
- Operate PITs to stow cargo on vessels, including small forklifts and yard mules.
- Operate chain saws and chop saws.
- Secure cargo with lashings and carpentry, and safely remove lashings and other securements.
- Visually inspect lifting gear.
- Maintain a clean work area.
