About The Position

The Longshoreman position involves advanced labor tasks in vessel holds and terminal operations. Employees are expected to have substantial experience and specialized training to perform complex cargo handling, equipment operation, and securing procedures. The role demands a strong understanding of cargo stowage and safety practices in high-risk environments. Proficient in a wide range of tasks and tools. Capable of troubleshooting common issues and making minor adjustments. Works with minimal supervision and contributes to process improvements.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in vessel hold operations and advanced cargo handling.
  • Completion of specialized training in PIT operation, cargo securing, and equipment use.
  • Proficiency in operating forklifts, yard mules, chain saws, and chop saws.
  • Strong understanding of cargo stowage principles and safety standards.
  • Physical ability to perform demanding tasks in varied environmental conditions.
  • Reliable, safety-conscious, and able to work independently or as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Hooking on cargoes in the hold for unloading and unhooking during loading onto the vessel.
  • Understanding cargo stowage, dunnage & securing requirements.
  • Proficient in Operating PIT’s stowing cargo on the vessel - Small Forklift or Yard Mule.
  • Proficient with chain & chop saws.
  • Proficient in securing cargo with lashings and carpentry, & safely removing lashings/securements.
  • Visually inspect the lifting gear.
  • Maintain a clean work area.
