About The Position

Maintains and preserves horticultural and botanical features using sound horticultural practices; educates visitors; safeguards and enhances departmental assets; and ensures high‑quality service and product delivery—all of which elevates the guest experience at the zoo.

Requirements

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age to operate vehicles and riding or landscape equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of relevant computer and software applications, including word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to push/pull up to 75 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid driver’s license
  • WI DATCP Category 3.0, 3.1, or equivalent Pesticide Applicator License.

Responsibilities

  • Plant, clean, and maintain annual and perennial flower beds throughout the zoo grounds.
  • Plant and maintain trees and shrubs throughout zoo grounds.
  • Watering, mulching, fertilizing, weeding, pruning, cleaning, and maintaining ornamental annuals, perennials, turfgrass, and shrubs throughout the zoo grounds.
  • Create new and renovate existing ornamental and native planting areas through thorough site preparation, including invasive species removal, soil amendments, grading, and installation of hardscape features.
  • Operate hedgers, string trimmers, aerators, rototillers, and other small-engine landscaping equipment.
  • Design, set up, and maintain seasonal and special event decorative displays and photo opportunities using live and artificial plants, props, lighting, and other elements.
  • Seasonal maintenance of zoo grounds, including snow removal, litter and trash collection, and leaf blowing.
  • Provide information and direction to zoo visitors.
  • Assist other zoo departments and guests.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
