About The Position

This position performs professional, supervisory, and administrative work in the Planning and Zoning Division, with zoning review and support responsibilities for the Board of Architects and Board of Adjustment. This position is designed to enhance the customer service experience through the building permit review process, with emphasis in enhanced coordination between the technical requirements of the zoning code and the aesthetic quality of the architecture of Coral Gables. Exercises considerable initiative and independent judgment under the direction of the Development Services Director or designee.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Urban Planning, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in Architecture, with emphasis on zoning compliance issues.
  • Three (3) years of managerial and supervisory experience.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License.
  • A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification with the American Institute of Certified Planners desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the administration and management of zoning team members and activities.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining policies and procedures related to the enforcement of all applicable laws, ordinances and regulations, zoning code changes, and building permit zoning review.
  • Performs impact fee calculations associated with the building permit review.
  • Performs zoning review for large projects and coordinates zoning staff review responsibilities in collaboration with the City Planner.
  • Supervises field inspections of zoning staff to ensure compliance with all minimum zoning and City ordinances.
  • Supervises and assists with the Certificate of Use and alcohol licenses review and issuance processes.
  • Formulates recommendations and coordinates the administrative requirements, including the preparation of staff reports and presenting to the Board of Adjustment.
  • Issues determinations and advisory letters regarding zoning designations, building sites, and other zoning-related purposes as requested by applicants.
  • Reviews existing zoning and City ordinances, proposes changes, and develops revisions; represents the Department before the City Commission as required; revises procedures, forms, etc. as may be required.
  • Explains zoning regulations and review processes to developers, architects, contractors, and property owners; provides direction to staff regarding zoning interpretations, procedures, and Board of Adjustment applications.
  • Responds to correspondence and memos from the public and other City departments.
  • Prepares various reports, as needed for consideration of requests by City Boards.
  • Trains and develops new staff members in departmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
