The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Engineering Services is seeking a Zone & Projects Supervisor. Under general supervision, this position provides day-to-day leadership, coordination, and oversight of assigned operations shop staff and project activities in support of hospital and facility operations. The position is responsible for supervising corrective, preventive, routine, and emergency maintenance work, with greater emphasis on project coordination, zone operations, mechanical repairs, and minor renovation work. This role plans, prioritizes, and assigns daily and weekly work based on operational needs, customer service expectations, project timelines, staffing levels, and the condition of assigned spaces, equipment, and building systems. The position reviews work orders and service requests, monitors repair and renewal needs, and coordinates staff, materials, vendors, shutdowns, and affected departments to support timely completion of maintenance and project activities. The supervisor also assists with job cost estimates, work plans, material lists, procurement of supplies and services, and related operational documentation. The position has significant responsibility for overseeing the quality and coordination of project work, mechanical repairs, general maintenance, and related operational activities to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with departmental, organizational, and regulatory standards. This includes completing and coordinating project-specific Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRAs) and other Engineering Services infection control documentation, ensuring staff follow required containment, barrier, and worksite practices in patient care and other sensitive environments, and supporting compliance with healthcare safety and operational requirements. This role also provides direct supervision of staff performance and development by establishing work expectations, monitoring productivity and workmanship, conducting performance reviews, supporting employee training and onboarding, and participating in recruitment, selection, and personnel actions. The position serves as a key point of contact for operational issues, service concerns, vendor coordination, and interdepartmental communication related to assigned areas of responsibility. In addition, the position supports compliance with applicable OSHA, NFPA, The Joint Commission, infection control, and other healthcare-related standards; maintains accurate work, project, and CMMS documentation; assists with development and revision of operational procedures; and responds to emergency calls and urgent facility issues, including after-hours support as needed. Overall, this position plays a critical role in coordinating zone operations, project work, and mechanical and facility repair activities across the organization.
