About The Position

The Youth Wellness Specialist will focus on bringing wellness programming to youth at the Rita Bright Family & Youth Center. They will design wellness focused activities and collaborate with internal and external partners to lead hands-on activities that promote a healthy lifestyle for Rita Bright Family and Youth Center. Latin American Youth Center’s (LAYC) mission is to empower youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood, through comprehensive and innovative programs that address youths’ social, academic, and career needs. To achieve this mission, LAYC provides services and opportunities to approximately 4,000 individuals annually to support academic achievement, promote healthy behavior, and guide youth towards successful adulthood. Requirements

  • Experience planning and leading activities for youth.
  • Experience with wellness themed activities such as gardening, cooking, yoga, etc.
  • Classroom Management
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings for school events.
  • Complete criminal and child abuse/neglect clearances.
  • Flexible, energetic, positive individual with commitment to youth development in a high quality, respectful environment.
  • Ability to work well and communicate with culturally diverse populations.
  • The COVID-19 vaccine is required of all its employees.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with cooking/nutrition education preferred.
  • Experience with urban gardening is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning/leading other programming for youth, including art classes and athletics/fitness.
  • Work with Rita Bright staff to plan and lead camp activities during Spring Break, Winter Break, and Summer.
  • Data entry.
  • Plan and lead a wellness driven curriculum and activities for youth ages 6 to 15. (Rotating Quarterly
  • Create an enriched classroom environment promoting safety, inclusivity, and academic support.
  • Oversee or assist with additional afterschool program activities as assigned. Including academics, various enrichment sessions, athletics, lunch/snack and events.
  • Engage with volunteers and partners and include them in wellness activities with Rita Bright youth.
  • Lead & Chaperone a class group during Spring Break and Summer Camps, as well as DCPS Fun Days
  • Support Rita Bright families by connecting them with LAYC and external resources.
