About The Position

Skating Program Volunteers assist leaders with preparing and implementing a variety of skating programs for children ages 3-5Y or 6-12Y. Volunteers are required to skate and should be comfortable on the ice.

Requirements

  • Between 13 and 17 years of age
  • Completion of minimum of Emergency First Aid with CPR C or Lifesaving Society Bronze Medallion Certification
  • Completion of Volunteer Training – Provided by Westside
  • Proficient skating ability
  • Willing to learn new processes and follow procedures
  • Enthusiastic and a positive role model for children
  • Comfortable and confident on the ice

Responsibilities

  • Review lesson plans to be aware of the activities scheduled for that day
  • Welcome participants and patrons as they enter the space or program
  • Actively participate in program activities and interact positively with children
  • Assist participants in developing and practicing new skills
  • Aid in the set-up and take-down of equipment associated with the program
  • Supervise participants and ensure they are following safety rules and guidelines both on and off the ice
  • Know how to assist in emergency procedures
  • Model appropriate behavior: listen to the leader(s), sit with the group during instructions, etc.
  • Help with demonstrations or instructions as requested by the leader(s)
  • Give positive feedback to participants
  • Check messages and communicate regularly with supervisors
  • Log hours on the appropriate time sheet
  • Arrive on time and ready for shift in proper uniform, including a CSA-certified winter helmet and properly fitted skates (volunteer must provide their own)
