About The Position

This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs Grant. The Youth Support Worker develops and delivers youth focused programming. Activities include summer camps, day trips, drop-in programs, arts, sports and social activities and events. The Youth Support Worker report to the Youth programs supervisor and works collaboratively with other staff to provide a safe and fun environment.

Requirements

  • High-school diploma
  • 1 -2 years experience working with youth ages 10-18
  • Able to manage and facilitate small groups of youth
  • Current Standard First Aid certificate with CPR level C & AED
  • Experience and sensitivity with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity
  • Well developed interpersonal and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with youth participants, staff, and volunteers
  • Demonstrated high level of customer service skills
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations. International participants are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding program activities
  • Administrative duties include registration, day trip planning and procuring program supplies.
  • Schedule program activities and communicate with partners
  • Act as the point of contact during program activities
  • Organize, plan and support day camp and drop in programming
  • Actively facilitate and interact with youth and lead programs in a positive and professional manner
  • Build meaningful relationships through positive interaction with YMCA program participants
  • Ensures that the program operates smoothly and ensures that the service provided to communities is of excellent quality
  • Assist in outreach and registration of program participants
  • Research, develop and deliver program activities
  • Procure, organize and track program materials
  • Communicate and work collaboratively with parents and guardians, school district staff and other YMCA staff
  • Model appropriate behavior in line with the Mission, Vision, and Values of the YMCA
  • Create and maintain a positive atmosphere and work to build positive self-esteem and confidence
  • Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/ procedures
  • Maintain an atmosphere of achievement that inspires self and others to succeed at the highest levels
  • Maintain a neat, orderly, and clean environment, including all program areas, common spaces, and washrooms
  • Attend staff meetings, planning sessions and training events as required
