About The Position

The YMCA Youth Sports Staff is responsible for the planning, implementation, and supervision of youth sports programs that promote physical fitness, teamwork, and skill development in a safe and positive environment. This role is essential in fostering a love for sports and physical activity among youth participants, ensuring they have a fun and enriching experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Red Cross CPR/AED Certification

  • Capability to run, jog, or demonstrate sports techniques and drills as needed
  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment (typically 10–50 lbs), such as cones, balls, nets, or training gear
  • Ability to bend, kneel, squat, and stretch frequently during instruction and interaction with participants
  • Sufficient hand-eye coordination and motor skills to demonstrate proper techniques
  • Ability to physically assist participants when needed (e.g., helping with positioning, basic safety support)
  • Capacity to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, light rain) for outdoor sports roles

Responsibilities

  • Assist in organizing and executing youth sports programs, including practices, games, and special events.
  • Teach fundamental sports skills and rules, ensuring all participants understand and can apply them in a supportive manner.
  • Monitor the safety and well-being of all participants, enforcing rules and maintaining a positive atmosphere. Conduct regular safety checks on equipment and facilities.
  • Encourage participation, inclusivity, and sportsmanship among all youth participants, fostering a positive team environment.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with parents, guardians, and participants regarding schedules, expectations, and program updates.
  • Collect feedback from participants and parents to assess program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
  • Work closely with other YMCA staff and volunteers to ensure seamless program delivery and a cohesive experience for participants.
  • Participate in staff training sessions and professional development opportunities to enhance coaching skills and program knowledge.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children.
  • Attend required abuse risk management training.
  • Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job-specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
  • Ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitor high-risk locations (locker-rooms and bathrooms), etc.
  • Ensure children are properly signed in and signed out, ensure only authorized adults are allowed in the facility, etc.
