About The Position

As a YMCA Sports Official, you’ll be responsible for officiating soccer, volleyball and basketball games while ensuring a safe, fair, and enjoyable experience for all participants. Your role includes enforcing game rules, maintaining control of the game, and promoting good sportsmanship among players, coaches, and spectators. You’ll play a key part in creating a positive and inclusive environment that reflects the YMCA’s core values, while addressing any safety concerns or conflicts that may arise during practices and games.

Requirements

  • Prior experience as a sports official or referee is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the specific sport being officiated is essential.
  • Certification in officiating (if applicable for the specific sport).
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Strong understanding of the rules and regulations of the sport.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to make quick, fair, and confident decisions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and run for extended periods.
  • Capability to work in various weather conditions if officiating outdoor sports.
  • Fairness, integrity, patience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • A genuine interest in working with youth and promoting positive youth development.

Responsibilities

  • Officiate youth sports games, ensuring adherence to the rules and regulations of the sport. Make impartial and accurate calls during games.
  • Ensure the safety of all participants by monitoring the play area, identifying potential hazards, and responding appropriately to any injuries or emergencies.
  • Encourage and model good sportsmanship, teamwork, and positive behavior among participants, coaches, and spectators.
  • Communicate effectively with players, coaches, and parents. Explain rules and decisions clearly and calmly.
  • Assist in setting up and taking down equipment for games and practices. Ensure all necessary equipment is available and in good condition.
  • Address any conflicts or disputes that arise during games in a professional and effective manner.
  • Attend training sessions and meetings as required. Stay informed about rule changes and best practices in youth sports officiating.
  • Maintain accurate records of game scores, incidents, and any disciplinary actions taken.
