About The Position

The Youth Sports Official helps seasonal YMCA sports programs run smoothly, with player development and safety at the forefront. The role monitors and maintains facilities and equipment used for the program and acts as an extension of the Program Director in charge of sports by addressing questions and concerns from coaches and participants. The position helps create a safe, enjoyable environment in which participants can learn skills, make friends, exercise, and compete.

Requirements

Maintain current CPR/AED/O2 and First Aid certifications, renewed annually; training is provided by the Y if needed.
Complete officials training.
Complete all required annual compliance training within 30 days of hire and renew it annually.
Have a working knowledge of the sport being supervised and understand the Y mission in sports and how it is carried out through the Y’s Core Values.
Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
Be able to walk or stand for long periods and lift up to 75 pounds.

Responsibilities

Arrive before scheduled games and stay late as needed.
Ensure the YMCA Pledge is said before each game.
Communicate participant problems and concerns to the sports Program Director through the chain of command.
Interact with program participants courteously, respectfully, and professionally.
Enforce YMCA rules and respond to actions inconsistent with the YMCA mission or philosophy.
Help organize and maintain the program area and YMCA equipment to provide a safe environment.
Report all incidents to a supervisor.
Carry out approved emergency action plans when emergencies occur.
Perform officiating duties impartially and fairly.
Keep the sport fun for participants and, as appropriate, help players learn the game.
Set up and inspect playing surfaces before games to support player safety.
Communicate effectively with parents, coaches, participants, and volunteers.
Accept responsibility for association-wide sports programming as needed.
Develop meaningful and sustainable relationships with members, donors, and volunteers.
Work on weeknights and/or Saturdays.
