About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Sports Director develops, organizes and implements high quality YMCA sports programs. The Director is responsible for maintaining working relationships with the community and vendors while performing these duties in accordance with the policies, procedures and standards established by the YMCA of Greater San Antonio.

Requirements

  • Experience managing a large number of sport program participants and budget is required.
  • Must have leadership experience supervising both staff and high volumes of program volunteers as well as proven success in peer group work settings.
  • A strong foundational knowledge of the technical aspects of basketball, baseball, soccer, football, and other sports, and a firm grasp on the concept of using sports as a vehicle for Youth Development.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Strong problem solving skills required in interactions with parents, coaches, volunteers and staff.
  • Must understand the basic concepts of a voluntary, non-profit organization, as well as the structure of the YMCA as a partnership of volunteers and staff, and accept a commitment to the YMCA mission.
  • Employee must have working knowledge of a Mac environment, Gmail, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Certifications required within the first week of hire: Bloodborne Pathogens, Defensive Driving, Appropriate Touch, Child Abuse Prevention, and Hazardous Communications.
  • Certifications required within the first 60 days of hire: YMCA approved basic life saving skills such as CPR, First Aid, AED.
  • This position must have the ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Must be 21 years of age, have a valid driver’s license, and have the capacity to drive to various locations within the greater San Antonio metropolitan area.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent is preferred.
  • Two years experience directing sports programs is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and manages sports operating plans to promote program growth for the branch. Executes strategies to ensure that members and/or program participants connect with one another and connect with the YMCA.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises site staff in assigned areas. Facilitates Branch level communication and provides leadership. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  • Provides support to the annual fundraising campaign and volunteer committees/ boards as assigned. Develops and maintains effective working relationships within the community.
  • Establishes new program activities and expands programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Responsible for flier distribution at local elementary schools, email blasts to past participants and coaches, and community publications and events.
  • Assures compliance with state and local regulations. Ensures that program standards are met and safety procedures are followed.
  • Manage, build and maintain branch relationships and collaborates with branch leads and outside organizations to reserve gym spaces.
  • Assist with developing and managing yearly budget expenses for assigned locations to achieve budgeted income
  • Develops site staff schedules and conducts Coaches/parent Orientations and Sports Specific Trainings each season.
  • Manage and Respond to Y Sports email for assigned location
  • Managing program conflict/issues throughout season (parent, staff, teams)
  • Recruit and Manage volunteer coaches to ensure an adequate number of coaches for program needs. In addition, develop seasonal coach directories, ensure adequate files for all volunteer coaches, background check and proper CBCs for all volunteer coaches.
  • Manage Inventory and Player Space and team scheduling.
  • Attends appropriate and needed training offered by the YMCA of Greater San Antonio. The Director must also be present to all training that concerns the sports department
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in the program.
  • Submits required information for table files for program registration. Builds rosters for all youth sports programs by ensuring that coach, player, and other special request are met.
  • Create and cultivate community partnerships (food vendors/spurs/missions/photos)
  • Develops practice and game schedules and transports and sets up equipment for games and practices as needed.
  • Program Plan for leagues and clinics (dates, fees, programs) and Onsite Supervision of Programs
  • Maintains safe and clean program areas, including indoor and outdoor areas, YMCA and non-YMCA facilities and equipment, and helps to monitor all maintenance crews.
  • Follow systems, practices, and training related to risk management and safety of participants and staff and follow incident report procedures and policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
