Requirements

  • Experience playing, coaching, teaching, or participating in organized sports or physical fitness activities.
  • Ability to work effectively with youth ages 9–17.
  • Ability to work with both male and female youth.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and appropriate conduct in a residential treatment setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to safely lead physical activities and sports programming.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet SPRTC requirements for transporting youth, if transportation is an assigned responsibility.

  • Previous coaching, recreation, physical education, youth programming, or athletic experience.
  • Formal coaching, fitness, athletic training, or physical education experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide structured sports instruction and coaching for youth ages 9–17.
  • Work with both male and female youth in a professional, respectful, and inclusive manner.
  • Plan and conduct practices, drills, conditioning, and recreational activities.
  • Provide instruction in various sports and conditioning activities.
  • Modify activities based on youth ability, age, physical limitations, behavioral needs, and treatment considerations.
  • Teach fundamental athletic skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, communication, and appropriate competition.
  • Encourage participation and provide positive reinforcement while maintaining appropriate expectations and boundaries.
  • Serve as a coach for the SPRTC Recreation League.
  • Organize and conduct practices in preparation for recreational league games.
  • Transport and supervise youth participating in approved community recreational league games and activities.
  • Represent SPRTC professionally while participating in community-based activities.
  • Communicate with recreation league staff, coaches, officials, and community partners as appropriate.
  • Ensure youth follow SPRTC expectations and community league rules while participating off campus.
  • Maintain appropriate supervision and accountability of youth throughout community activities and transportation.
  • Establish positive, professional relationships with youth while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Use sports and recreation to promote communication, cooperation, accountability, confidence, and healthy coping skills.
  • Support the facility's trauma-informed approach when interacting with youth.
  • Reinforce positive behavior and encourage youth to make healthy choices.
  • Work collaboratively with Recreation, Clinical, Education, and Program staff.
  • Follow individualized treatment plans, behavioral expectations, safety procedures, and supervision requirements as applicable to recreational activities.
  • Recognize and report safety concerns, behavioral concerns, injuries, or other significant incidents to appropriate SPRTC staff.
  • Maintain constant awareness of youth safety during all activities.
  • Follow SPRTC policies and procedures regarding supervision, boundaries, transportation, emergency response, and youth interactions.
  • Follow all required facility, licensing, regulatory, and documentation requirements.
  • Immediately report injuries, accidents, incidents, or safety concerns according to SPRTC procedures.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with youth at all times.
  • Protect confidential youth and facility information.
  • Complete all required training and maintain required certifications.
