About The Position

The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of programs and services to children and their caregivers, including weekly Storytimes. The position requires knowledge or experience in child development and includes special projects at the direction of the Public Services Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Experience working with children required
  • Basic knowledge of public library operations, policies and procedures
  • Strong knowledge of reference tools and procedures
  • Ability to communicate well orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, volunteers, and the public
  • Ability to work well as part of a team, generating and sharing in the enthusiasm for the valuable work of the library

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Library Science preferred
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the position
  • Confidence in creatively using social media and other virtual platforms to articulate library mission, resources and services
  • Knowledge of current trends, standards, and emerging technologies and their application to libraries
  • Ability to cover, develop and present library programs for a range of ages

Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops, and implements regular Storytime sessions for specific age groups as directed
  • Plans, develops, and implements after-school, evening and/or weekend programs for children as directed
  • Assists in the planning, development, and implementation of other library services as directed by the Public Services Manager and Library Director
  • Assists in collection development and the selection and promotion of materials for the children’s collections as directed
  • Provides reference and readers advisory services to patrons of all ages via email, in-person, and over the phone
  • Prepares displays on a rotating basis
  • Prepares bibliographies, pathfinders, and other informational materials as assigned
  • Assists in promoting library resources and services through social media and other platforms
  • Assists patrons using the library catalog, online databases, and other resources
  • Assists patrons with the use of public computers, printers, e-readers, and other equipment
  • Investigates complaints
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Makes public appearances on behalf of the library, and maintains good community relations through participation in community events
  • Attends professional conferences and related activities
  • Maintains current knowledge of the public library field and child development by completing regular continuing education
