About The Position

The Youth Services Coordinator supports the mission of Alternatives For Girls (AFG) by serving youth in the Detroit community through after-school and summer programs focused on youth development and risk prevention. This position provides direct services, facilitates workshops, and supports participants in building skills that promote academic success, leadership, and positive decision-making.

Requirements

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong decision-making and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication; able to demonstrate diplomacy and tact.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to lift and carry program supplies and donations regularly.
  • Minimum of 1–3 years of experience working with youth engaged in high-risk activities (e.g., gangs, violence, drugs, truancy, sexual activity, or other high-risk environments).
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, a good driving record, and access to a personal vehicle.
  • Proficiency in basic computer software and data entry.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Education, Human Services, or related field preferred (equivalent life/work experience may be considered).
  • Experience with youth leadership training models, peer counseling, adolescent development, workshop planning, and facilitation strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and facilitate workshops aligned with program and grant goals.
  • Support curriculum development as needed.
  • Deliver programming focuses on leadership, conflict resolution, communication, teambuilding, social-emotional skills, self-esteem, and healthy lifestyles.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with participants, acting as an advocate for youth regarding school, community, interpersonal, and family issues.
  • Maintain accurate participant records, including daily case notes, progress notes, and attendance.
  • Prepare and serve meals/snacks; ensure program spaces remain clean and organized.
  • Provide transportation to participants on an as-needed basis.
  • Help the program meet quality, scheduling, and budget requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
