About The Position

Under the mentorship of existing staff, this position provides a hands-on introduction to the broadcast industry, including programming production, to equip an individual with the basic knowledge for an entry-level position with Hewel Ni'ok Network, managers and operators of the Tohono O'odham Nation's licensed radio stations. Work is typically reviewed upon completion for compliance with organizational/department goals, policies, and procedures. Major work activities allow for flexibility in methods, priorities, and project planning and coordination.

Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age.
Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
General knowledge of music genres popular with the 14-25 age group.
Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with employees and the public.
Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Ability to exercise independent judgment.
Ability to plan, assign, and review the work of assigned volunteers.

Ability to travel within the assigned work area, as needed.

Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules, including holidays and weekends.
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience.
Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required.
A 39-month Motor Vehicle Record check is required.
May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to operate program vehicles.
Fluency in both Tohono O'odham Language and English may be required based on department needs.

Responsibilities

Audit and edit music proposed for airplay, including researching lyrics and information to ensure compliance with FCC and federal copyright laws.
Produce assigned programming projects by researching topics and interviewing knowledgeable individuals.
Assist in developing audio loops, music beds, promotional themes, and branding for the O'odham Youth Media web channel.
Assist staff on remote broadcasts by setting up equipment, managing temporary spaces, engaging courteously with the public, and maintaining a safe environment.
Provide reception services to the public at the Main Studio in Covered Wells or the KWAK-LP Studio in San Xavier when directed.
Conduct voice-overs for pre-selected programming, public service announcements, and community events.
Assist in preparing mailings, public information packets, and monthly service reports.
Act as an on-air host for assigned programming.
Observe the general administration of the studios and assist staff with administrative tasks as requested.
Gain basic knowledge of audio processing through multi-track digital recording, digital audio recorders, and audio editing.
Travel within the assigned work area.
Represent Hewel Ni'ok and O'odham Youth Media professionally.
Perform other duties as necessary to accomplish related tasks and qualify the intern for future broadcast industry employment.
