About The Position

First Ascent Climbing & Fitness is seeking a highly motivated and organized youth coordinator. The youth program coordinator would be responsible for the performance of the youth program at Peoria, including the youth classes, all seasonally relevant climbing camps, birthday parties, and family meetups and events.

Requirements

  • Availability during the 4pm-8pm time-slot on weekdays.
  • Availability during the 10am-1pm time-slot on weekends.
  • Full time availability during school holiday breaks is ideal to support camp efforts.
  • 1 year or more of personal climbing experience is required.
  • High level of energy to match the energy of kids who are always “climbing the walls!”
  • Be safety focused and vigilant.
  • Possess good communication skills with both children and adults.
  • Be dependable and timely.
  • Upstanding reputation in the climbing community.
  • Ability to take initiative to seek innovation that optimizes quality and growth in a small program, ask questions where needed, and communicate effectively with both an in-person and remote network of team members.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year or more of experience working with children, preferably in sports, is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the youth instructor’s first line of contact regarding any issues they may be having during the normal operations of their class. This may include any difficulties with individual students, help with teaching methods, or scheduling issues.
  • Conduct regular check-ins with youth program staff.
  • Independently run 1 to 1.5 hour classes with 4-6 students (depending on age).
  • Implement a structured curriculum, but also be creative and flexible when necessary to maintain maximum student engagement at all times, and adapt to individual student needs.
  • Communicate with parents regarding their child’s progress.
  • Track student progress in order to inform student advancement.
  • Recruit, hire, onboard, and train new youth instructors as needed.
  • Be the point person for performance improvement conversations with staff, and work with managers regarding staff performance.
  • Provide ongoing instructor training and support through check-ins and shadowing classes.
  • Create staff schedules and coordinate with the support team to fill classes.
  • Assist in implementing youth program policies alongside Youth Program Director and local Gym Leadership team.
  • Design and create gym-specific lesson plan materials for instructor use.
  • Assist with class coverage when necessary.
