About The Position

The Youth Mental Health Peer Outreach Intern will learn from the Supervisor of Youth Psychotherapy (Preceptor) and will be responsible for providing outreach and education in the community. This includes conducting peer-to-peer trainings, participating in community collaborations, managing administrative tasks related to scheduling and events focused on youth mental health, and learning to provide referrals to the Youth Mental Health program. Key learning objectives include professional development in Youth Mental Health First Aid facilitation, utilizing supervision for skill growth, and attending weekly supervision. The intern will also gain experience in on-site advocacy and outreach in schools and community events, connecting with neighborhood schools and organizations for partnerships, engaging in community collaborations for networking and recruitment, organizing and executing peer-to-peer trainings and an annual Self Care Fair, supporting grant reports by collecting data and tracking attendance, developing a system for referrals, and identifying areas for skill-building around working with LGBTQ+ individuals, individuals living with HIV, and youth impacted by trauma.

Requirements

  • Must be a member of an institution with a work-study agreement with Whitman-Walker.
  • Must meet the institution criteria to be eligible to participate.
  • Must be able to attend a half-day orientation.
  • Must complete required additional in-person training.
  • Must complete surveys via ADP.
  • Must complete compliance training through Healthicity.
  • Must comply with all regulations of the internship and policies of Whitman-Walker, and the affiliated Institution.
  • Upload a resume and cover letter.
  • Submit a letter of agreement from the affiliated institution (if selected).
  • Submit a student identification card (if selected).

Responsibilities

  • Provide outreach and education in the community through peer-to-peer trainings.
  • Participate in community collaborations and events.
  • Manage administrative tasks related to scheduling and events focused on youth mental health.
  • Learn and practice providing referrals to the Youth Mental Health program.
  • Facilitate peer-to-peer training in the community and on-site at WWH.
  • Provide on-site advocacy and outreach in schools and at community events for WWH’s Youth Mental Health program.
  • Connect with neighborhood schools and organizations for partnership and seek out areas of need in the community.
  • Engage in community collaborations and events to network and recruit for training and events.
  • Organize and execute two peer-to-peer trainings on Youth Mental Health First Aid and an annual Self Care Fair.
  • Support grant reports by collecting demographic data and tracking attendance at training.
  • Develop and organize a system for referrals from community events into therapy programs.
  • Work with supervisor to identify areas for skill and competency building around work with LGBTQ+ individuals, individuals living with HIV, and youth impacted by trauma.
