About The Position

The Youth Dance Instructor leads safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate dance classes for children and teens in alignment with the YMCA’s mission and core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. The instructor creates a welcoming and inclusive environment where participants build confidence, creativity, teamwork, and physical wellness through dance instruction. This role supports youth development by encouraging positive relationships, skill-building, and personal growth while ensuring a high-quality program experience for participants and families.

Requirements

  • Minimum age requirement: 18 years old
  • Experience teaching dance to children and/or teens.
  • Knowledge of dance instruction techniques and age-appropriate programming.
  • Ability to lead groups in a positive and energetic manner.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain within required timeframe.
  • Ability to pass required background screening in accordance with YMCA policy and state law.

Nice To Haves

  • Formal dance training or certification in styles such as ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, tap, or contemporary.
  • Previous experience in youth programming, camps, or recreation settings.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and varying skill levels.

Responsibilities

  • Assist age-appropriate dance classes for youth participants.
  • Teach dance techniques, choreography, rhythm, movement, and performance skills in a positive and encouraging manner.
  • Foster an inclusive environment where all participants feel welcomed, respected, and supported.
  • Maintain a safe class environment by following YMCA policies, supervision standards, and risk management procedures.
  • Monitor participant progress and provide constructive feedback and encouragement.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding class expectations, schedules, and participant development.
  • Arrive prepared for each class with lesson plans, music, and equipment needs.
  • Assist with performances, showcases, special events, camps, or community programs as assigned.
  • Maintain attendance records and incident documentation as required.
  • Support participant behavior management using positive guidance techniques.
  • Collaborate with YMCA staff to promote member engagement and retention.
  • Model YMCA values and maintain professional relationships with participants, families, and coworkers.
