About The Position

The Youth Dance Instructor is responsible for building positive relationships among members, participants, volunteers, and staff by providing excellent customer service, guidance, and leadership. The instructor creates and leads engaging, age-appropriate dance classes in a safe, effective, and positive environment that supports the physical, social, and emotional development of youth participants. The instructor should possess knowledge and teaching ability in one or more dance disciplines, including ballet, tap, jazz, and/or hip-hop, and create an encouraging atmosphere that builds confidence, creativity, and a love of dance.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Knowledge of and experience teaching or performing at least one of the following dance styles is required: ballet, tap, jazz, and/or hip-hop.
  • Ability to create age-appropriate choreography and adapt instruction to meet varying skill levels.
  • Must successfully pass a California Department of Justice (DOJ) Live Scan fingerprint background check as a condition of employment.
  • All job required trainings within 90 days from date of hire
  • Strong communication skills and the capability to work with participants of all levels and abilities
  • Knowledge of fitness principles and practical applications required
  • CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, obtained within 30 days of hire and must be from one of the following certifying organizations: American Red Cross American Heart Association American Safety & Health Institute

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching youth dance classes is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Create a positive class experience by welcoming participants, encouraging active participation, and fostering confidence, creativity, and enjoyment through dance instruction.
  • Provide a safe workout routine by demonstrating proper form and technique, appropriate modifications, and cueing
  • Develop and/or follow a progressive dance curriculum that provides sequential skill development in ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, or other assigned dance styles, adapting instruction to meet the age and ability levels of participants.
  • Maintain a clean and safe workout area
  • Effectively utilize scheduled class time
  • Properly set up and breakdown class equipment in allotted timeframe
  • Build community through forming positive relationships through learning names, and helping members reach their Health & Wellness Goals
  • Adhere to the core functions of the YMCA and exemplify Y Group Exercise Class Guidelines
  • Ability to communicate verbally to large and small groups of members
  • Physical ability to lead and participate in exercise/fitness activities
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
  • Other duties as assigned
